I'm just watching ... very cool. So, is there a B744 sim sitting next to the B738 sim then, now?

Markus

dts

Markus - no ,  744 in one location, 738 in another, but same twitch and webpage and crews

I have been in this sim.  It is near to me. It is 95% genuine parts, very cleverly put together.
An amazing achievement..

Looks great :-)

Is this version 10.0.0 or 10.0.1?

400guy

Is there any additional info available about this sim and the site hosting that video?

dts

400 Guy,

what info do you want?

current version is Beta 2

Hardy Heinlin

I highly recommend to use the final 10.0.1 version. Your VNAV idle descent will be much smoother next time ... so you won't need to switch to FLCH or V/S :-)

I was just curious about the sim (in the video).  Where it is, construction details etc.

I assume that the site showing the video is something like utube.

Hi 400guy,

I haven't got a website detailing the construction of the sim as just haven't had the time, although I am keeping a picture blog on my Facebook page.

Having build a hand built 777 simulator in Camberley,UK about 15 years ago I dismantled it when I moved house 9 years ago.

I then spent 5 years flying Ralph's amazing 737 simulator to continue our word flight team, learning from Ralph how to build a sim properly labelling everything and actually doing a small bit of planning.

Having recently moved house I found myself itching to build another sim, this time with no compromise.

It was originally a plan to build it over a few years but turned into an obsession since December 2013.

It all started ordering a 747 DSTD from FDS and some real yokes and seats from a 747 classic.

Around February time I got chatting with Tom at UAM who gave me some prices on some used 744 parts from aircraft scrapped by the Japanese airlines.

Before I knew it I had the whole overhead frame and panels shipped over from the US with CB panels, along with the entire interior trim.  Project anti faff 747 was born!

A friend and I spent most of the summer wiring this up to be a standalone unit with a few usb cables coming out the back, my dad and I also lead a go at some building work to convert the detached garage into a sim room, plastering the walls and blocking up the main door and installing a new water tight door.

Next step was how to mount the flight controls, a plan was hatched thanks to a friend who sent me over a flight control box to mount the yokes in with all the linkages, the problem was it was 18inches deep, which meant the sim wouldn't fit height wise in the garage.

During a bank holiday weekend we had a "how hard can it be" moment and hired some equipment suitable for digging roads up and in spent 3 days digging an 28 inch deep hole through 8 inches of concrete with 3 layers of rebar.... My neighbour is still waiting for his shoulder operation after using the jackhammer for 2 days solid (he seemed to enjoy it at the time!)

By the time the hole was complete the throttle quadrant and pedestal panels had also turned up from the U.S. , within the space of 2 weeks we went from the hole in the floor to what looked like a 744 cockpit as far as the rear windows.

Then there was several weeks of wiring all the circuits up as planned.

It's taken a few months of finishing bits off and building back to the cockpit door and instructor station but last night we took her online for her first proper online flight egll-egcc-egll-eham-lowi and it was great fun!

Next step install the ARINC boards and window panes, still a long way to go but much quicker than first thought.

All hopefully in time for world flight 2015.

Specs
-------

All real parts except for MIP,MCP,CDUs

I3 for PSX server
I5 for avionics
I3 for mfd cdu
I7 for p3d running 3 projectors on 2x770 FDS cards at 35fps minimum 60average
Old i7 for web streaming and instructor station

All rack mounted.

Thanks to hardy for making PSX and being the inspiration to build a 744, I still can't believe the whole sim boots up in 30 seconds, then waiting for p3d to catch up!

cheers
Gary

(Excuse typos, that was a good way to pass the train journey to work on my phone :) )

Amazing work Gary, it is very impressive. I've just started on my sim building journey and am waiting for my FDS DSTD  :D

400guy

Thanks for the information.
Great job !!

Gary:

Unfortunately I missed the Twitch feed... Would you provide a linky to the page with the sim details?  I have stayed with a "generic" sim as I enjoy some varied aircraft, however, the cockpit builder in me seems to routeinly raise his head:).

Ta!

I'm watching (every now and then).

It looks pretty stable. A bit too stable. Two hours to go. Could someone set a temporary flame-out on #4 please? :-)

Hardy,

You are right things have gone very smoothly.  We even got the pax signs working correctly during the cruise (hence Marks question on the networkers forum).

We then got even more bored and now have Skype interfaced to the SATCOM menu on the CDU to talk to dispatch or the other team:-)

Always amazing how well PSX performs on these little events.

Cheers

I flew with you the STAR and approach. I saw your weight data and route waypoints etc. on the screen and typed it in, so my ship agreed very much with yours, even though I wasn't networked.

But we used exactly the same real-world UTC and real-world METARs, so I too got those two thunderstorm cells left and right! This little gap in the middle was really a lucky coincidence :-)

For a few moments I was thinking Britjet was sitting on the F/O's seat ... :-)

Cheers,

Britjet was at home having a stiff drink after his previous sector!
They are online again from 08:30 this morning, I think. I am on the 12:00 sector from Kai Tak to SIN

Awesome :) Will you be happy to share that on the forum?
