I find that the first attempt to connect after opening my browser always has a delay. I will do some more monitoring with wireshark to see if I am getting any DoS attacks...

Wireshark is the way to go, yes.

It's highly likely that the first attempt needs to establish a TLS session cipher, which is an expensive process. It does not only require CPU-intensive calculations (that is hardly an issue these days on a PC) but also a lot of handshaking between the peers. If any of the switches or routers or gateways on the link is not yet ready for action and needs to figure out the route, this may take a while.

Or it's simply the most local DNS that is not yet awake.

Due to the fact that I have had issues with my service provider modem and its faulty cache before I may try a factory default and reload my settings. That seemed to fix slow access a few months ago. The Netcomm they provide may have caching issues. I amy also look to see if there is a firmware update as well...
