Less than four weeks to go... The sim is ready, sceneries installed, checklists freshly laminated and vacation days sacrificed. :)

(if you have no idea what this is about, visit https://www.worldflight.center/)

Who else will be taking PSX on a whole or partial round the world flight in November? Which legs will you fly?

I'm going to fly some of the legs this year.  For some reason the timing is wrong for me on a lot of the days. Last year I flew almost two-thirds of the legs.  But for some reason it appears that I'll be lucky to get in half of the legs which I guess is pretty good for a single pilot operation.  ;D  I did notice that daylight savings time comes off on the first Sunday of the event.

Macroflight what is your callsign?  I'll be on the lookout for you.  :)  I normally use TXS51 on Vatsim.
Grace and Peace,

As always, please pre-check whether all required ACARS functions are still available, I may have broken some rarely used ones that nobody complained about yet.

Will cycle 2409 be used?

Since the event starts November 2nd, I guess most participants will use 2411, but it is VATSIM so not mandatory to have updated nav data, just highly recommended.

Two-thirds of the leg is seriously impressive for one person. I did 21 and some partial legs last year, and that felt like one or two too many. "Should I make a proper lunch, go for a run, or do just one more leg...?" :)

The callsign will be BAW126.

Unfortunately, WF coincides with the US Defense Language Institute alumni multi-day reunion at the Presidio of Monterey in Monterey CA. I was in русский decades ago, and DLI was the most amazing time of my life. I would not miss it for the world.

Thanks to everyone from the PSX Forum for your support flying along with us over the years.

If anyone else is planning to join please let me know and I will add you to the WorldFlight Affiliates page

Of course it's the Germans again.

This is the OLDEST account on the ACARS system that has been in continuous, uninterrupted use for...

OVER 13 YEARS!!!

I am working in daytime but will try to join on most of the legs starting after around 16:00UTC time during the week.

(Working to get my new glareshield done next week so I am fully ready to kick off the journey on the first leg out of YSSY Saturday late evening here in Europe)

My callsign is GTI74L - a nice "refreshed to my liking" Atlas Air 744 :D

Cheers

ACARS did silly things lately, I still believe it was external to my system. It works great up to 1300 users, then the user number drops slowly as we go into the evening and BANG! suddenly everything is 100 times slower and the workload piles up and the system collapses. After spending a few frustrating days implementing runaway brakes and other kludges, this morning I woke up with one hour extra and decided to fix it properly.

So I hacked a Redis cache right into the working system without taking it down. Ok. My way of showing off.

The load with 1400 users now dropped to 2.3% CPU and 0.03 on the 1-minute clock. Ah. That's better. I still pull 50+ HTTP(S) requests per second but since the majority of ACARS "users" only logs on and polls for new messages while there aren't any for them, as they don't ask for things first, the cache is hyper-effective.

However. With Worldflight coming up, please make sure everything is like you need it. I think it is, but this amount of traffic is not easy to monitor and I may overlook things left and right.

Last call before Worldflight...

I believe that your ACARS system is now so widely used and well tested (e.g for PDC and CPDLC during the really big VATSIM events like CTP/CTL) that the WorldFlight traffic will just be a little blip on the graph.

Jeroen Hoppenbrouwers

Yes, but with all the open heart surgery that I did lately, I want to be sure that all required functionality is still there.

Performance-wise I think it is really good now.

Hey Hoppie - sitting here doint the last minute prep for WF2024 and notice I am represented 2 times in the ACTIVE CALLSIGNS ONLINE and at the same time both entries have a network overload warning.

My callsign is GTI74L and flightnumber is 5Y2705 but it seems that I am showing up as both 2705 and GTI2705 in the list. I am "only" using Gary´s BACARS for logon.

Thanks for any hints.

I don't think there's anything you can do to change this yourself. I can also see myself connected as BA2401 (the flight number used in the Simfest portal) and BAW126 (the actual callsign I use on VATSIM and the one I put in RTE > FLT NO).

Gary is aware that BACARS talks to Hoppie's server a little more often than what's optimal, and I think it's on his TODO list.

But given how small the PSX/BACARS user base is, I think the extra load on the server is not an immediate problem. I hope Hoppie will warn us here before banning BACARS. :)

I see now on https://www.hoppie.nl/acars/system/callsign.html?network=VATSIM&callsign=2705 that your messages are sent as "2705". That you *can* fix, make sure you have entered GTI74L on in the FMC (RTE > FLT NO).

Gary Oliver

Yeah something I want to sort out, but yes we get a connection for both the FLT INIT REQ FLT NUMBER and the one on the route page.

Jeroen Hoppenbrouwers

Two logins mean indeed two logins. Two competing ACARS links.

Load... don't bother too much. Since I stuck a cache in front of the database, it's no longer so relevant. Fix when able.
