Initiating VNAV descent: question

Flying in ECON CRZ now, my speed is M0.847. That's pretty typical. On VNAV ECON DES 3/3, the planned descent speed is M0.880/297, which is also pretty typical.

The issue is that at the point of transition from CRZ to DES, the difference between 0.847 and 0.880 is pretty big, which leads to a rather abrupt pitch down, in order to accelerate, in the first seconds of the descent.

Obviously, I can smooth out the profile by setting the CRZ speed to 0.880 before descending, or by setting the DES speed to the current CRZ speed. Or by speed intervening for a while and handling it manually.

I guess I'm surprised that the aircraft doesn't do a smoother transition on its own.

Thoughts and information about real-world techniques appreciated. Thanks.

I just retested it with the Basic 016 situ, with NG FMC and your speed settings. It was a smooth transition. No abrupt dive.

If the CRZ and DES page title is "ECON," then the speed is based on the entered Cost Index. If the cruise Mach is 0.847M, that would indicate an entered CI of approximately 200 (assuming no wind). The ECON DES Mach will always match the cruise Mach at TOD. In this case, the ECON DES Mach should have been 0.847M. A descent speed of 0.88M is exceptionally high and would require a cost index above 1000. No one uses cost indexes that high.

Is this the case in all FMC versions? My source was Bulfer's FMC Guide, page 123, where some typical CI examples are given for the PIP, 747 and 777 FMC:

CI 9999:
CRZ .839, DES .816

CI 60:
CRZ .796, DES .795

CI 0:
CRZ .780, DES .759

I guess I've misunderstood these examples. Of course, in CRZ, the ECON Mach will change along the route profile. Bulfer certainly showed here just an average CRZ Mach and not the CRZ Mach at TOD.

If it's confirmed that the ECON Mach is really always equal to the ECON DES Mach in the 744 FMC (NG or legacy) I will modify PSX accordingly.

(I can't change the general CI model for the CRZ as I have no exact data, but this issue at TOD is easy to modify.)

I think you may need to tighten your statement a bit. I'm not sure that the ECON Mach and the ECON DES Mach are always equal during the whole cruise phase or descend phase -- they probably change.

However,

the final ECON Mach is really always equal to the initial ECON DES Mach in the 744 FMC (NG or legacy)

sounds alright to me.

For what is worth, on the 767, the ECON descent Mach number equals the last ECON cruise Mach number.

Here are two Cost Index references based on the optimum altitude for a given weight. These are for no wind and temperature at ISA + 10 or less. In ECON, the Mach increases with a headwind and decreases with a tailwind. However, the Mach will never be lower than CI 0 Mach based on no wind. As such, the cruise Mach is never less than approximately Mach 0.831.

LRC Mach is approximately 0.851M (the passenger version is slightly higher at 0.86M), equivalent to a Cost Index of roughly 230-250. If fuel is the primary cost factor, a cost index of 25-80 is preferable.

In today's world, how much effort is put in calculating a CI per flight or per season? Or is the whole idea of balancing time versus fuel costs out of the window and the CI is basically fixed for years?

Also, with oceanic crossings on tracks usually giving you a fixed Mach anyway, how much ECON is actually being used? Is all this 1990-think still relevant today? It may be, I just don't know.

From the North Atlantic Operations and Airspace Manual, version 2024, AMD4 (and applicable from March 2024):

"Cost Index (ECON) Operators can flight plan Cost Index (ECON) provided that the planned true Mach number for any portion of the flight within the NAT is specified in Item 15 of the ICAO FPL. Flight crews can fly Cost Index (ECON). ATC will assign a fixed Mach number if required due to traffic."

Hi Hoppie,

Yes, our company has the CI set for 2-5 years. We had 80 for a while and are now down at around 10 for about a year. But we adjust it on a everyday basis to our needs or let it stay at the planned CI.

On all oceanic routes you will get a fixed mach number, you can also only state your request in fixed mach, but depending on traffic, lately even Gander or Shanwick on OTS routes will send you a ,,resume normal speed" msg via cpdlc after entering and after getting a fixed mach number for the crossing. On random routes with Iceland it is even more usual to fly ECON after requesting a mach No. but in both cases you will request a the speed for crossing close to your ECON spd from CI. So we still work daily with CostIndexes even when they change during the flight.

from several photos of Atlantic crossing, the Mach number is still fixed, with an ECON switch afterwards. So prior and after NAT it is CI. Which coincides with Simon's post. :-)

Oceanic Mach Number Technique, or fixed Mach, applies only when assigned by ATC, either by voice or an oceanic clearance. The NAT HLA is the only airspace that requires oceanic clearance, and the requested Mach is part of the RCL.
In all other oceanic airspace, ICAO Annex 2 applies. Inform ATC if the Mach changes by +/- 0.02 or more. The Mach filed on the flight plan is typically based on the Cost Index. For example, if the Cost Index is 80 and the filed Mach is 0.84, the speed can vary between 0.821 and 0.859 without informing ATC.
A few years ago, the NAT HLA started Operations Without Assigned Fixed Speed (OWAFS). After receiving your oceanic clearance with the assigned Mach, Gander or Shanwick usually sends a CPDLC MSG to resume normal speed (ECON), at least until recently.
Now, with the Datalink Mandate coupled with Spaced-based ADS-B, the requirement for oceanic clearance is being removed. Santa Maria and Bird have already removed it, and Gander, Shanwick, and Bodo will follow on December 4th. In a few months, all oceanic airspace will operate at ECON speed.

Here is a situ. As soon as things stabilize from the load, press ALT SEL to simulate ATC giving you a descent to FL250. As soon as you press ALT SEL, the ECON speed goes from 0.749 to 0.844, and the vertical speed changes rapidly to -1750 fpm or so, before stabilizing a minute later at -750 fpm. In this flight, ATC had given a few step-downs, from FL390 to FL330 and now (at this point in the situ) to FL250. On the previous step downs, DES mode wasn't triggered, so the speed stayed constant. This descent triggered DES mode, so the speed jumped quite a bit, from 265 kts to 310 kts (M0.749 to M0.844).

You see the same thing by pressing DES NOW> instead of pressing ALT SEL; the result is the same either way.

Will, in the next PSX update I'll make the DES ECON speed equal to the TOD CRZ ECON speed anyway. But your situ leads me to a new question for the ECON experts:

Say, there are 1000 CRZ miles to go to the TOD. Therefore the current ECON speed on the CRZ page is different to the ECON speed on the DES page which refers to the conditions at TOD. -- What should happen to the active ECON speed when I do a DES NOW in such a situation? I guess the FMC will immediately set the ECON speed on the DES page equal to the current CRZ ECON speed. I mean we are descending now at the current weight and weather conditions and not at the predicted conditions 1000 miles further ahead.

For what my opinion is worth, I assume that the FMC will adjust the ECON speed to the conditions existing when initiating the descent (just as it does during a significant cruise descent - ECON speed progressively decreases in both the cruise and descent pages, unless the descent page speed was previously "hard-selected" by the crew, which is something for which to look out after an unexpected very early descent with a protracted intermediate level-off.
