The attached is a screenshot of PSX weather generated from the associated METAR - I switched off updating from the internet for the screenshot.

Would these settings result in lightning and wind noises whilst the aircraft is sitting on the runway? The winds are light and only light rain showers.

Hardy Heinlin

I think lightning is possible but other CB generated effects should be impossible because the vertical size of your CB is smaller than 15000 feet. I guess you're not in a SIGMET area either because the tab title isn't red. Are you sure the noise you're hearing is wind noise?

Thank you for your quick responses. I cannot be 100% sure about whether the 'noise' is wind but I just wondered if the lightning was possible and you confirmed that it is so I will investigate the source of the sound!

A separate minor question - does PSX ATIS select the runway only on the METAR wind?  What if there are more than one possible eg 36L, 36C, 36R (EHAM)?

Hardy Heinlin

Of parallel runways it takes the longest runway, I think.

Jeroen Hoppenbrouwers

Since EHAM 36L is only for takeoffs (and 18R only for landings) it may be that the database is also consulted?

Hardy Heinlin

PSX cannot identify one-way runways nor landing-only nor departure-only runways.

Hi Hardy

Sorry for the delay in responding. I have retested and the 'wind noise' is not wind but is associated with the lightning strikes and so is very convincing!!

I know little about weather and am interested in how lightning is associated with CB clouds, their altitude, etc and how common are CB clouds (and hence thunder and lightning) especially away from the tropics and at low altitudes.
