I can relate to this incident in some way. I started my career in the merchant navy as an engineer. In the late 70s we transported an elephant on deck in a big cage. During a storm the elephant broke loose and was roaming the deck!

I seem to recall the horse handlers who flew as supernumary crew had something to kill them if need be. I have this vague recollection it was a gun of some sort (not a tranquiliser), but I don't know how that would be legal.
