Customizable towing?

Thx a lot Hardy!
Would be a huge benefit for our project!

Is there a standard turn radius on the turn tracks that are painted on the asphalt at all gates world-wide that are designed for 747 operations?

I'm asking because I need a default value for the edit field.

Of course there is no real pushback radius... but on page 141, they state:
Quotefor towing data related to turning, see section 4.2
which is the usual taxi radius stuff. Interestingly there is a section 4.2.5 Turning Radii - Towed which may be useful here.

Obviously the wing tip clearance is also relevant.

Before I start the modification ...

Guys, as far as I understand your goal, you want to move the aircraft by injecting a series of Qs122 injections with heading and position commands. Why should the turn radius of the towing simulation in PSX affect your Qs122 injections which generate specific curves and lines anyway?

Also, why do you want to inject tiller deflection angles during towing? Do you want to steer the tug vehicle with the tiller? Or is it a cosmetic thing? If I make the turn radius editable, the tiller will automatically deflect to an angle according to the present user defined turn radius.

Hardy,

Me and Macro's revised approach when we spoke offline was to use the internal PSX tow functionality and abandon the QS122 injections.

For this we could have a moving map with a curved line out the back of the aircraft showing where the PSX tow will go over time, and then with the ability to change the turn radius/nose angle we can turn at different rates to end up on the centre line of the taxi way.  A bit like how a car rear parking camera and steering wheel works.

We could then extend this to have a series of pre programmed commands in our application which drive the variables available to us for complex taxi routes that automatically get picked.  For example:

[Push Straight for 10 seconds, turn left at 30deg for 10 seconds, straight for 5 seconds, turn right at 15deg for 3 seconds.]

I don't want to inject tiller, I want to inject a turn radius.  I just mentioned that I could see the tiller was a value during the turn.

In my mind the radius didn't need to be an exact figure, being able to inject a value of 1 for 'very slow turn' to 999 for 'tightest turn possible by nose wheel physics' would be more than acceptable.  However if the value corresponded to a value of 'nose wheel - degrees off centre' or 'turn radius in meters' that would be helpful for map drawing maths.  Being able to adjust the value during the push would be required.

Thanks again for all your help with this!

Cheers

Hi Hardy
hi guys,

well, I would've been highly interested in your offline discussion as well ...

Guess we have the same goal with different approach: I would like to get rid of injecting Qs122 as well. My approach would've been to define path coordinates (nodes). When I know (or can define) a radius, I can calc the distance where and when to start the turn, ending up on the next segment of the path, with perhaps some fine tuning of course.

Defining the nodes could happen with my repositioner (as per video) or by any other better solution over a map. Then to tool should do all the rest. Perhaps some minor +/- radius adjustments, to get a more precise result.

Whichever way we are going (perhaps we end up with two different tools to prove the most feasable way) a given radius makes more sense to me as well.

Thanks for your input and support in this, Hardy!

Cheers

Hans,

Perfect! We are accidentally aligned!

Will add you to a discord chat so we don't duplicate efforts!

We can share a common core and then can control from either the EFB or your App easy either way!

Cheers

Sounds excellent, Gary

Wilco.

You guys get a Qi for turn radius in feet in the range from 20 to 99999. The tiller will be set accordingly but that's just a cosmetic effect due to its mechanical link to the nose wheel steering angle which is controlled by the tug driver which performs your turn radius commands.

Great!!! Thank you very much, Hardy!

Added Qi275 "TowTurnRadius" that sets the towing tug's current turn radius in feet (20 to 99999). When towing is completed it resets to the default of 216 feet; apart from this reset, it can be changed at any time. – Now available in PSX update 10.183:
