Aerowinx must have audio disabled in order to launch on macOS Ventura

Hi everyone!

Thanks for taking the time to read this!

I'm running Aerowinx on a MacBook Pro M1 with the latest macOS installed (Ventura 13.5.1). Yesterday, I also installed the latest update for JAVA from Oracle (Java 8 update 381). I'm also running the latest version of Aerowinx (10.171)

Long story short: yesterday, after the JAVA update, Aerowinx started misbehaving. I used the program the day before without any issues whatsoever.

Now, if I want Aerowinx to start, I must disable the Audio from the main menu, otherwise, it won't go over 31%, and the yellow window will appear,
stating, "Please double-click on AerowinxStart.jar to start the simulator" (which is the one I click). Please click on the following link to see a screenshot of the problem: Aerowinx Problem.

This problem occurs only on my MacBook Pro. If I try running Aerowinx on a different Mac, or even on the same MacBook Pro, but on Windows 11 (through Parallels Desktop!) I have no issue at all! The simulator launches fine with all the audios.

Any help would be great! Thanks a lot!

Hi Pier,

the yellow window appears when the audio interface isn't linked in the PSX start command. It is automatically linked when clicking AerowinxStart.jar. Sometimes users click Aerowinx.jar instead of AerowinxStart.jar, and in that case the interface won't be linked, and PSX will then miss the link and think that the user clicked the wrong jar file, and so PSX will show that yellow hint.

I guess the new Ventura system has a stricter safety mechanism and automatically unlinks that interface file because it's from an "unknown developer". That causes PSX to think the user clicked the wrong jar file.

I personally still hesitate to upgrade to Ventura. But there are some Ventura users on the forum that use PSX without problems. I think they set a special parameter in the Ventura Security Preferences. Maybe they can jump in? (Sorry, I'm of no help here.)

Anyway, this year I will try to integrate a newer version of that interface (I'm not the author of that interface) in PSX. I hope it will resolve that Ventura problem as well.

Hi Hardy,

Many thanks for your reply! Just to clarify: Aerowinx always ran smoothly on Ventura. For some reasons unknown to me, all the problems came after I installed the new update from Java.

At first, the program didn't launch at all. I eventually found a way of making it work thanks to your suggestion on a different thread on this forum: renaming the iconMac.gif file to iconMac.gif-up.

Is there anything I could try to make it fully work again on my Mac? It's not a such a big big deal not to have the sound, I use the simulator mainly for training purposes. Worst-case scenario, I can run it on Windows...

Thanks again!

Pier

I have a similar problem on my newer iMac which still uses Big Sur. It freezes every few seconds for some seconds when the PSX sound goes to the iMac speakers. The problem is solved when I plug in headphones and restart PSX, i.e. when the speakers and the speaker amplifiers are off. I guess it's a bug in Apple's security system. It may be related to your problem which also looks like a security thing in the Mac's sound system.

It doesn't have to be headphones. I can also plug in external speakers in the headphones jack. It's just about deactivating the inbuilt speakers. Maybe it helps in your case as well.

Hello again Hardy,

My apologies for not getting back to you sooner! Thanks again for your help and suggestions. Unfortunately, that trick didn't do the job with the pair of headphones I had with me. I'll try with some other ones when I'm back at home.

Pier
