What function has the "Director" ?

Hello,

watching aviation videos, I have noticed, that during approach phase  sometime (eg EDDF) there is a "Director" on ATC.

I have never heard before of this, I wonder which position was substituted with the director and which function he has. Why has this been introduced and when ?

Greetings

Hi Ahmed,

in a nutshell, it is the responsibility of "Director" to line up the aircraft on the final approach course.

Typically, "Approach" gets arriving aircraft handed over from the lower shelf of the enroute sector and takes them to downwind (or the holding stacks) on one or both sides of the final approach, where he hands them over to "Director". He will then line up all aircraft on final by means of radar vectors, with the goal to have them at the same speed in the correct sequence and with optimum seperation.

See e.g. here:
