VNAV ALT descending

On that same situ, please try this:

Press the TOTVO INT> and Execute.

You should be flying in SPD | HDG SEL | VNAV ALT.

Then turn to heading 040 and watch what happens after a minute or two.

When you get 8.1 miles away from TOTVO, the FMC commands a speed reduction to 203, which is obviously much too slow for the configuration. Is this right?

[Edit: I understand that VNAV is expecting the pilots to configure the aircraft for the upcoming descent, but in this case, the aircraft is quite a ways from the actual approach track. What triggers the speed reduction?]

TOTVO has a 200 knot constraint and VNAV is engaged. 203 is LIM SPD due to flaps up.

It will do this even if you are exactly on the route. The LIM SPD 203 is your protection.
