20 years ago or so I was invited to play around in a research sim at the Dutch NLR. Next to the funny combo of both a yoke and a sidestick at the same time, it had double collimated displays. No fun. Straight ahead was fine and great, with your eyes actually focussing at infinity to get a sharp picture. But gaze to the right (when in the left seat) and the whole illusion breaks, as the collimated mirror simply did not get that angle. The right seat likewise could not use the left seat's mirror. So you definitely need more expensive equipment.

The experience I had in the then brand-new Lufthansa 744ER sim was much better. That one wasn't yet fully certified so nobody could use it, except the engineers. Well, we did... I clocked up 20+ hours just flying circuits in that weekend  :-P

So, what about these old style visual system?

These will always exist in the old big sim. It is definitely not the round-screen as the big sim nowadays but just s flat mirror at the front side. And you can see the different "view-angle" of the runway from the camera. And you will find that, as you move the eyes point, both sides "view-angle" change. So I am pretty sure it use a mirror not just a screen. And I think it use two independent front mirror for each side, while you can also see the left-view mirror at Cpt side and the right-view mirror at the FO side, which may makes you feel strange. You will also find the real CRT on top of each mirror.
I think it use either total-reflection or just some mirror just for extending the viewing distance.
I am now building my sim with most of the real components in a very limited room. So I plan to build the visual system like these old bigsim. Two independent front view is satisfied with me as IMOP the outside is not that important. Hah hah.
Hope some one could give more details information about this old visual system.

Hi Guys

Well, there are infact 2 gentlemen, building a cross-cockpit collimated display system.
Gives one an idea on what's needed to achieve such a goal!

Amongst other stuff you are going to need a real nifty vacuum cleaner though..  ;)

Here is the link  don't know if they are still at it, though...

and there is an update from a thread on CockpitBuilders.com :
