Help with Windows 10

With my older win7 machine having problems, I'm trying to get PSX going on the new machine with Win 10.  I think I've got all the files installed in the right places in a desktop file, but running the AerowinxStart jar file just gets me a request to select an app to run it.  I'm still finding my way with Win10 speak and interfaces and suspect I doing something simple wrong with the Interface files or something.  Any suggestions?

Thanks

Hi
So assuming you have installed java run time then the next thing to try would be click onto more apps and then when prompted how do you want to open this file browse to the bottom of the list and choose look for another app on this pc. So in my case I would choose C:\Program Files (x86)\Java\jre1.8.0_101\bin

I also note mine requires updating :)

Hope this helps

Be aware that running any files/programmes from a desktop folder in windows 10 will cause issues with updates and changes. The desktop is seen as a private folder and programmes are usually blocked from performing their own changes or updates.
If you are using a shortcut on the desktop to start a program then that is OK.
I advise most people with Windows 10 to install their (non-microsoft) programmes in their own folders on in a root dirsctory (for example C:\Lockeed Martin\..., or D:\Aerowinx\....). This allows the maximum permission rights to both the user and the software itself.

Thanks for tips, guys

I remember a few years ago I had problems getting PSX up with the shift to Win7 on a new computer.  This seems similar.

Attaching the java bin program to the Start file for opening as suggested did get rid of the error message but now I just get a brief opening flash of a window opening and then shutting.  PSX doesn't start.  So something's still off.  I'm using just the transferred copy of my previous working Aerowinx folder.  Question - both old and new machine are 64 bit systems - the Program Files (x86) is right folder for 64 bit java installation isn't it?  I've been trying to shortcut going back to the full CD installation etc. but maybe I should try that.  Also Win10 handles scaling of windows etc etc differently than Win7 so maybe something else needs setting in the display settings.  Anyway - any ideas appreciated.

In windows 10 make sure you turn off UAC (User Access Control) you can do this via the control panel.
Go to https://java.com/en/download/ and download java runtime. You will thyen be able to install the runtime.
Make sure your aerowinx folder is in your root directory (eg C:\aerowinx)
Once you install the java runtime I did not need to associate the jar file as it was already recognised.
The scaling of the windows is a windows 10 "randomly generated feature" (microsoft doe snot have bugs).
I find if I load the 1920x1080 layout and then save it as my default then all is OK, but if you minimise aerowinx and then restore it, you will find it always comes back in windowed mode not maximised....

UAC is your biggest issue, turn it off :)

It's designed not for Personal Computers but for Your Bosses Computer.

Anybody noticed that "My Computer" disappeared and is now "This PC"? It's either your bosses computer or Microsoft's computer. Not yours.

Re: Groundhog Day (look it up)

Arrrrgggggghh

I seem to be re-living what I experienced in about 2014 shifting to a Win7 64bit computer.  Good news is my problem is not to first order related to PSX, but to getting java environment set up properly in Win10 64bit environment.  I went back to basics and just tried to run the PSX install java file from the my Aerowinx CD disk - same problem - just a windows flash and no other action.  So my problem not related to backups, vers etc. probably but to java install and related problems in Windows 10 64bit versions.  The only good news is that it seems like some of you are successfully running in this environment so I have hope.

Hi Torrence,

Try running Jarfix (a quick Google with find it). If that doesn't work try using a BAT file to launch Aerowinxstart.

On my Win 7 machine Aerowinxstart is a "Executable JAR file", on my Win 10 machine it's just a "JAR file". I can't for the life of me change that on my Win 10 machine but running through a BAT file seems to work.

Information in jarfix was the key - once I got jar files opening with the correct file PSX started normally.

Back in the air again

Thanks to all.

Re: display settings etc.

Thanks for comments, Alex. I run PSX from a touchscreen laptop  and extend the display to a 50 inch 1920x1080 TV (with layout adjusted for the FMC's, throttle and pedestal stuff on the touch screen and the window view, PFD, ND, etc. on the big screen).  It's particularly twitchy to get the extended displays dragged on to both screens just right so that when you turn off the windows frame they just fill the screens.  I've found that particularly with Win10 that when I make display adjustments I then have sign out and reboot and run PSX to make sure the changes stick.  I've most got it working again now.

There are some freeware apps you can get which allow you to save your screen layouts.
I use multiple PC's for my simming so have not used any (one old laptop runs both CDU's using PSXSeecon and SIOC). If you search for keeping screens active or "screen toggle" for windows 10 you should find some advice on how to use the apps with multiple monitors.

Windows is not as flexible as Linux when it comes to configuring screens even if you use Nvidia or AMD apps.... :)
