Using DES NOW in CLB Mode

Hi Hardy,

I am reluctant to bring this up since I don't plan on using the DES NOW feature to get out of CLB mode, but I happened to be doing a situ from JFK-DEN and I leveled off at 5000' on the climbout. Out of curiosity, I decided to set in 4000' and try the DES NOW feature to see what it would do. It shifts into DES mode, slows to 240 knots (below the zero flap maneuver speed), and starts a descent, but does not level at 4000. It just keeps descending at about 500 FPM.

The Atlas check airman tried this back in June and said it wasn't available in the sim, but you pointed out that the manuals seem to be contra. In this situ https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B-WRh0Hf7VdZTERyV3R4dmt0UFk/view?usp=sharing it is looking at RW16R in DEN for an E/D, which is 5380', but it still retains the altitude constraint for the arrival into DEN in 1R. Maybe it is confusing VNAV. I am inclined to think that DES NOW is not available in this situation, because it can't descend when it is looking at a higher altitude in 1R.

It's definitely not a priority issue since 10.0.9 now makes it possible to get out of CLB simply by installing a new approach and extending from the approach fix, or by re-cruising. Again, I don't care one way or another, but just wanted to bring it to your attention if you were interested in looking at it. Thanks.

Okay. No problem. I have no conclusive opinion right now on whether or not it should work in CLB, or under what conditions it should work in CLB.
