I'm doing a flight out of KSDF (Louisville KY).  The departure is runway 17R using the STREP3.
According to the charts:

TAKEOFF RUNWAY 17R: Climb heading 168° to intercept course 183° to LEENE,
then on depicted route to STREP, thence. . . .

All this makes sense so maybe I'm just used to what some people call a sim-ism.  I set up the FMC for the Departure and on the ND the magenta line is directly on top of the location of my position.  I thought the magenta line would be extended from the runway centerline to the point where it intercepts 183 to LEENE.  If you flew this departure with LNAV/VNAV then once above 400 feet the FD would show a turn to the Left to intercept the track line that starts at the beginning of rwy 17R.

Is this procedure meant to be flown with HDG SEL 168 after 400 feet then move LEENE up to go DCT with 183 intercept afterwards?

I usually hand fly all departures up to at least FL180.

On the Legs page I have:

168 hdg
(INTC)
---------------
184
LEENE
---------------

Looks like the FMC is confused because the 183° track is so close to the runway and can't be intercepted at 910 ft.

You can see the track if you enter LEENE on the FIX page and enter a BRG of 003.

Better fly this with HDG SEL. At 900 ft make a direct-to LEENE because the (INTC) will not auto-sequence.

Here's a solution for full LNAV guidance:

In the scratchpad enter ...

BARRR350/2

... and upselect it to 2L. Close the disco after BAR01. Then downselect BAR01 from 2L to the scratchpad and upselect it to 1L. In the scratchpad enter ...

0910A

... and upselect it to 1R, and press EXEC.

The LEGS page should now look like this:

BAR01     / 910A
LEENE
ONMEE

etc.

(BARRR is a waypoint on the extended runway centerline.)

Thank you Hardy for the explanation and help.

Works great and I learned something in the process.

Thanks,

This situation reminded me of the Helen 5C out of BRU. I guess there are times when the automation just won't cut it.

Subject: EBBR, HELEN 5C departure.
Sent: May 26, 2014 16:15

All,

Be aware that if cleared for the HELEN 5C departure from Brussels, the current coding in the FMS may not comply with specific radial intercepts required in the SID. The procedure requires a climb to 700', then a right turn to track 306°, to intercept the HUL 315° radial to HELEN intersection. Because of heavier departure weights (>700.0 Lbs.), the distance to climb to 700' and then track 306° will not put you on an intercept to capture the radial to HELEN.

As depicted above, if you see a broken track line displayed on the ND after ZFW entry, the 306° track will not put you in a position to intercept the required radial. After departure, and turning to 306°, line select HELEN to 1L. The INTC CRS of 315° should then be selected and intercepted (see below).

Please forward any questions to the Flight Standards office.

Thank you for your attention to this matter.
