PSX going black when moved to another screen

Hi,

I am trying to launch two instances of Aerowinx on a single computer to have two independant windows.
The soft works perfectly well on the screen it was first started, but since the two psx windows open on the same screen, I want to take one and drag&drop it on the second screen. At this moment, the windows goes black.

I can take it back to the initial screen, and it will work perfectly again.
I can also extends the windows across the two screens and it work fine but only if I start a single instance of aerowinx using aerowinxstart.jar

Any clue about this ?

Thanks

Avi

Hi,

I don't 100% remember the solution but you need to check or uncheck the Allow window stretching across multiple monitors checkbox in the Instructor / Preference / Basic page under Miscellaneous (last checkbox).

This fix the windows stretching which I did not like, but however the black screen issue remain.

Sometimes I have a message printed in the window, it looks like this:

Hardy Heinlin

I've never seen this effect.

Which versions of Windows and Java are you using?

What graphic card?

Does this happen with other programs too?

I am running latest java version, and my card is a GTX 570 with drivers 10.18.13.5887

I know another person who had the same issue, he used eyefinity to make his system believes that he actually has only one screen, but I cannot take this solution.

And no it does not happen with any other program, example with skyrim:

I also have java exceptions, i do not know if this is normal because they are correctly catched, but I'm putting the logs just in case (download rar file here).

Sorry, I can't open this rar file. Can you make a zip file instead?

You wrote it works with the first loaded PSX instance. What if you move the first window to the other screen, and then load the second PSX and keep that on the main screen?

emerydc8

When I had problems with the window going black as I tried to drag to other monitors, I discovered that I had to check/uncheck the stretch across multiple monitors box twice. So, if a back screen appears after you've dragged it over, then try check or unchecking the box again.

Here the zip link:

The instance - whichever number it is - is working normally only on the screen it first appeared on. Right now I am flying a flight with two instances loaded, the first one opened on my left screen, the second one opened on my right screen. If I take one or the other to move it to the other screen, it goes blank. If i move it back, it comes back to normal.

What works fine with only the first instance is the screen extention (wich I prevented by unchecking the Allow window stretching across multiple monitors), but even in that case, if I move the windows more than a certain percentage on the other screen, everything goes black.

Hardy Heinlin

Thanks for the zip. I see you're using Windows 7. Have you considered upgrading to Windows 8 or 10?

So is this the setting you want to achieve?

Zangdaarr

For now yes, it is the setting I want to achieve, with the IOS on a laptop. But it is troublesome to start because I have to:
- Start the first instance of PSX
- Start the second one and move it to the second screen, where it goes black
- Close the second instance on the second screen
- Restart it, it will start on the second screen and work.

Windows 8 is a big NEVAH and Windows 10 is not in question for the moment

what works for me:
To avoid the black screen, PSX needs to open the flight deck frame already on the screen where you want it to be.
To achieve this, you'll need
a) a dedicated layout (9pack) file for each screen/instance
b) a dedicated preferences (pref) file for each instance, telling PSX to start with the respective layout

- start PSX
- drag the flight deck frame to position & size where you want it to be
- save a dedicated layout (9pack) file for that instance (example screenX.9pack)
- make 'screenX.9pack' the layout to start with (Preferences -> Basic -> Start with layout: )
- save a dedicated preferences (pref) file for that instance (example screenX.pref)
- close PSX

repeat with second PSX instance
use AerowinxNetStart.ini to start both instances with their respective preferences 'screenX.pref'

Hardy has described this principle of dedicated prefs and layouts in much more detail:

The pref file retains on which screen to start the instance ?

Fine, this will do the workaround, however a fix would of course be appreciated for this :)

Actually not. The pref file stores the information which Layout (9pack) file to load at start. The Layout file retains the information where to place the PSX frames.
That's why you need both, a dedicated pref file AND a dedicated Layout file.

A preference file saves and loads the settings on these pages:
Preferences > Basics
Preferences > Audio
Preferences > USB

A layout file saves and loads the settings on this page:
Layout > Setting ... plus all current zoom, pan, and frame position settings

A model file saves and loads the settings on these pages:
Model > Airframe
Model > Equipment
Model > Programming

A situation file saves and loads the settings on these pages:
Situation > etc. ...

That's how the four file types are organized.

I believe this is also an AMD issue? I remember a few threads in the past about this.

This issue has hit me.  I redid my flightsim PC, and am using Windows 10 with an MSI 1080 graphics card (NVIDIA).  I use 3 monitors: an HDTV used for scenery driver (X-Plane 11), a 27" monitor, and a 24" monitor.  Like the OP, I caoukd not drag a PSX window to my 24" monitor without it going black.  I setup a netstart configuration as outlined by Hardy, but what happens is odd:  instance 1 starts, but its splash screen appears on the TV, then its window opens on the 27" monitor as planned.  Then instance 2 repeats the process, and even though I had dragged its window to the 24" monitor and Then saved new layouts and prefs, it opens on the 27" monitor.  When I drag it over, it does not go black, but I cannot size the PSX frame beyond a certain point (the Windows frame sizes up, but there is brown background filling in where the PSX frame does not expand further).

I am suspecting this is nvidia related.  Both monitors have same resolution.  Any ideas?

Thanks!

Please update to PSX 10.93, then start all your PSX instances, then select "Allow frame stretching ..." on Instructor > Preferences > Basics (on all PSX instances), save the current preferences on each PSX instance, then restart all PSX instances.

I'm at 10.93 already, and I think that deselecting frame stretching was what stopped the black screen from recurring, but I will Try selecting it again and see what happens this time around.

Thanks!

So things have gotten a bit weirder.  What seems to be happening is that executing the net start app is causing two identical instances of PSX to start, despite my listing two different .pref files in netstart.ini.

I then replaced the .pref listings with default netstartleft and right, and voila - those loaded individually.  I'm able now to drag windows where they belong, and clicking the "extend" box allows stretching without brown filler or a black screen.  So I just resaved those pref with new names and will re-enter my USB mappings, and move on.  Perhaps I somehow corrupted one of my pref files?
