Hey

Everyone around here is using a warthog made by thrustmasters... I am considering to buy one. My question is: Since the warthog isn't having a third axis for the rudder, how do you control the rudder? Are you using pedals? Or are you assigning two keys on the warthog for that? Or are you using the keys on the keyboard? Or is there even another solution?

thx

insight into that matter would be very much appreciated!

Hi,

PSX doesn't provide USB button assignments to rudder pedals, only to rudder trim.

You can move the rudder pedals in PSX only by using an USB axis, or by keyboard keys, or by TCP/IP-networked hardware pedals.

Personally, i use saitek rudder pedals, coupled with saitek cessna yoke, and just the throttle of the warthog. So basically 3 differents components without any issue in psx. Just have to make the correct assignments, that´s all !

Thanks for your response! This is a very valuable information!

Hi nobody; I use the Warthog joystick, Saitek throttles, and CH Products rudder pedals. They all work very well together.

Actually I am not looking for rudder pedals, I like the idea of a third axis on the joystick. The warthog seems to be the best (and most realistic) joystick on the market, unfortunately it only has two axis (which of course is realistic), so – after the very important input of Hardy – I only have two options: looking for rudder pedals or controlling the rudder via the control keys on the keyboard.

I think I will stick with the keyboard. Since you only need rudders in normal operation for take-off and landing roll, I hope the keyboard will be sufficient for that. I will give it a try.

One other possibility you might wish to consider....

On the right-hand side of the throttle base, near the front, is what the 'hog rather confusingly terms a "slider axis". Here's a picture of just the throttle base (i.e. with the throttle levers removed):

I use the "slider axis" for the tiller, but it's just any old USB axis, so you could assign it to the rudder if you wished to do so — especially since, helpfully, it has a centre detent. At first it feels strange and slightly counterintuitive to move it backwards and forwards rather than left and right, but you quickly get used to doing that (at least, I did).     ;)

Thx for the input Brian!

I just tried to do some cross-wind-landings... No way I can do that with just two hands. One hand on the joystick, the second hand on the throttle (F5/5) and the (imaginary) third hand on the rudder keys. I think the same will be true for the slider axis on the throttle base.

So it will only work with rudder pedals or with a three axis joystick. Can anyone recommend a three axis joystick? Which is close in quality to the warthog?

I am quite happy with my SAITEC X 52
