HW resourses vs framerate

Hi.

Over the last couple of days I have tested PSX on a vide range of hardware ranging from a puny centrino duo@1,83GHz with 2GB Ram (Lenovo T60P laptop with 1600x1200 display) to a Quadcore 3GHz+ I7 system with SSD, 8GB Ram and a huge ATI GFX card

I am wondering why the fast 4Core(8 threads) machine is not always running at 68FPS when flying PSX, - with system monitor showing slumbering CPU with one (logic) core half utilized and another around 20% on a second logical core. The remaining cores are idle. There is no activity on the SSD. All apps like Dropbox are stopped not to influence PSX

I suppose it is the GFX card that must be the bottleneck here or perhaps PSX is coded in a way that it is impossible to reach MAX fps at all times. If that is the case I will experiment with different setups in that respect.

It would be nice to be clear on this as I then can stop or continue my OCD for max FPS

Thank you in advance
Best regards
Kurt

Stop your OCD.

Just fly the airplane

Dear Kurt,

did PSX run on your laptop with 2G RAM? How was the frame rate?
Thank you,

Aldo

Hi Aldo, - will check different scenarios again tomorrow and report back :)

Hi Aldo, - sorry for the delay, - had to reinstall Win 7 on the old IBM T60p and here are the results for IBM T60p, 2,0 GHz CoreDuo, 2Gb Ram wit ATI Fire GL GfX running at 1680x1050:

All "measured" during "demo loop.situ"

General observation in this config is that outside view ruins the framerate, - it goes below 10 fps when outside view is visible. That is probably due to only 2GB Ram..

If outside view is disabled it runs at 25-72 FPS depending on layout. Even with all MFD's visible it runs at 40 FPS+. (when setup as a client it runs 72 FPS SOLID, - as right now when looking Pierre over his shoulder)

If no MFD displays are visible it runs 72 FPS SOLID even with audio on and with moving throttles in view.

Impressive I must say !!
Best regards

Hi Kurt.

Thank you so much for your time spent to answer my question.
It is amazing how much framerate is absorbed by the outside view!
So, I have to replace my old laptop with a newer one!
Have a nice Sunday,

Aldo
