English lesson: Time lapse

Good morning,

I'm looking for a suitable English word.

In PSX there's a "time accelerator/decellerator" (German: "Zeitraffer/Zeitlupe").

Currently it's labeled "Simulation speed factor". It shouldn't be confused with "airspeed factor" (it will happen), so I'm thinking of renaming it to "Simulation time factor".

But then, is that clearer? I'm not sure.

I can't call it "motion accelerator". That may as well be confused with the motion of the aircaft alone. The point is: The feature accelerates everything, the whole sim universe, not just the aircraft. So, the words "motion" and "speed" should be avoided.

"Time lapse" is a nice word. Unfortunately, I couldn't find a similar word for the opposite except "slow motion". But I want to avoid the word "motion".

The problem is, users who are not perfect at English may have never heard of "time lapse". "Speed" is a more common word. But, as I said, that one leads to misunderstandings, too.

Well, not a big problem. Was just thinking about it on the toilet.

MSFS uses "Simulation Rate".

"Time Warp" is nice, IMHO, though it may suggest a Space Travel Sim !

Maybe the best is what you said right at the start --
"Time Accelerator/Decelerator"  or simply "Time Accelerator".

My mechanical engineering mind wants to see the word "override". Possibly therefore "time override". When at 1.0 or 100%, time is normal. The issue remains that we are not overriding time, but time rate. So it should become "time rate override". Which, of course, is not necessarily any better than Hardy's original idea.

Moi,

was going to suggest "sim rate" before I saw that's an MSFS term.
May be I knew subconsciously.
Or they MS may have bought out, embraced and extended me without my noticing...

Alternative: "sim time scale" ?  
1:1 = real time
1:10 = slower than real (slow motion)
10:1 faster than real (time lapse)
The problem will be (like with map scale) that no one is quite sure which way round to read it.

Or a new unit: "PoRT" = Percentage of Real Time ?
20% = slow motion
120% = fast forward

"Simulation rate" is a term known to all users of sims, so I also vote this term.

That's what I also wonder about. I only use this function to get faster to the destination on long houl flights, but never to be slower than normal time.

I like "time ratio", too.

Unfortunately, the word "simulation" must be added also and then there are too many "atios" :-)

I've changed it to "simulation rate".

...

Factor 0.5 or 0.25 are useful to demonstrate processes that are usually too fast for the student. E.g. mode changes during autoland flare, checklist items during training patterns, hot start monitoring etc.

Useful in learning or analysing situations, where many things happen concurrently and fast, or record/ notice/ manage a number of fast varying factors or accurate account of things. e.g. you might want to practice engine failure during takeoff and manage accurate lateral-directional control while also noting relevant runway distances, without stopping or replaying the simulation.

To avoid the "atios" overfeed, why not "sim time ratio"? I may sound stupid.. but feeling odd getting some "typically M$F$ words" inside PSx makes me feel sick!

Informal abbreviations like "sim" are taboo :-)

If "simulation rate" would be a typical MSFS word, then I had to remove 333 other words as well ... pause, time, weather, air ... :-)

Whereby manual tasks on the flight controls are, at slow motion, not so much easier, rather more difficult. As everything is slower, all velocities, including the inertias, you might push the pedals too hard as the aircraft's turn rate is then slower as well. But, as you said, the slow motion is useful for those other automatic processes.
