Hello, I was wondering if anyone on here had Advanced Voice Client for communication with Vatsim.

I have, it isn't required anymore for voice comm on Vatsim.

Robert does not use the MSFS/VisualPS1 link, but the standalone SB747 squawk box, which needs the AVC standalone client.

Incidentally I started asking Ross (VATSIM) about how to handle multiple independant radios with multiple users on VATSIM - must follow that up...  might have to talk to Garry about the VVL at WF this year :)

Yep, down to just one lousy laptop :)  No multiple monitors.

I do not have MSFS etc. either, so I use AVC on VATSIM.
During my last VATSIM flight a while back I had some problems to tune ATIS, so I contacted the controller and asked for assistance. He recommended not to use AVC and it seemed to me he was completely confused and irritated by the fact, that there is a parallel flight sim world without scenerey and without MSFS...

I have the impression that VATSIM controllers tend to be come reluctant to publish the voice servers, so tuning channels with SB747/AVC becomes tricky sometimes. I have the impression that particularly tuning ATIS is not straight forward at least some times.

These problems were one reason why I started to have a look at IVAO. Voice handling seems to be easier there if you do not have have MSFS etc.

Holger: Any chance you could email me Advanced Voice Client?  I would love try it out!  I hate typing while trying to fly online :(

As far as I know, the way VATSIM uses voice still relies 100% on the publication of the voice server and channel ("room") in the station's local ATIS message. However, the system has a way to hide this publication to public viewing services such as Wazzup and ServInfo (these names may show my age). So you may not see them. But the SB747 squawkbox client will see them, and interpret them correctly.

The "dot commands" of SB747 offer a wealth of information for the technically inclined. By good use of these, you really can find out and hack every tiny detail of the operation.

For the nostalgically inclined...

Hi Jeroen,

I cannot remember all the details any more. In fact I finally used ServInfo plus your valuable dot ommands to connect to ATIS, but just by tuning the frequency (or using .freq command) AVC failed to tune the ATIS.

And I was so distracted by this communication problem, that I even did not check the "controllers in range" list to see whether ATIS (and its voice server) was listed there

Anyway, no offence to SB747! It's s great piece of SW :)

It takes a few seconds to find a Vatsim controller voice address using Servinfo.

Hi Opher,

you are right, using ServInfo is annother nice way to find the controllers voice server  :) But my problem with tuning ATIS arouse because voice ATIS was running on annother voice server than the controller was using. And despite all the tools available I somhow failed to find the corresponding ATIS voice server.
Unlike with all controllers, you cannot simply click on an ATIS station to see its voice server in ServInfo.
(And up to now I did not find out how to update the ServInfo list in the "Select voice servers" menu.)

To be honest, I did not really try to thoroughly investigate why SB747/AVC did not tune the desired ATIS channels automatically. It confused me that auto-tuning different controllers works flawless in allmost all cases, but auto-tuning an ATIS channel failed (for me) several times in sequence.
This made me even nervous  while being online  and thus I obvioulsy failled to use my tools efficiently

I guess next time I will immediately check the SB747 "Controller in Range" list or spend some time to find a good methodology to quickly find the ATIS voice server (e.g. using `.atis´ or `.rw p ´ etc.).
