While we're at it ...

Here's a remastered version of my old Kai Tak video:

Very nice to see the old Kai Tak approaches! :)
Some weeks ago I spoke with a friend of mine who is
a retired LH 747-400 pilot. He said on the final approach
they used a gate on an small soccer field as a marker for
the optimum approach. Never heard of this before.

Greetings

Hardy Heinlin

In fact, that "gate" could've been the the localizer antenna itself, or a part of it (the loc antenna is actually a row of several antennas). It was at the rear end of a green sports field. I remember from LH sim sessions, if you asked LH pilots for the way to the airport, the slogan was "Past the sports field: Right" :-)

I think he meant a real soccergate. But I will ask him, if I meet him the next time.
(And perhaps show him PSX too  .He is interested in flightsimulators, because he was, after his active career, some years in Frankfurt as a instructor on the 747-400 sims.)

Here's the localizer antenna (the red stuff) as seen when looking down from the checkerboard hill :-)

Very cool, thank you. I remember back in 1998 (just reached the legal age)
I have been in a 737 fullflight sim... landing at Kai Tak. What
a thrill! :D
I think just for the nostalgics among us, PSX could need
the IGS approach as a goodie

falconeye

You are right Hardy, it seems there is only the localizer antenna and no gate.
But by the way, very cool video sitting on the checkerboard filming and watching the big birds. Unfortunately I never managed to travel to Hong Kong. :'(

Servus and nice WE

Very nice. Really enjoyed it.

Yes, I also would appreciate this  :)

Here's a link that may help - is this the sports field landmark that is under discussion?

The wikipedia article on Kai Tak helped refresh my memory about its history and the approaches:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kai_Tak_Airport

-----------------------

I flew into and out of Kai Tak during a 6-week business trip around the South Pacific and Asia in 1989.  I still remember becoming freaked out as my 747 made its runway 13 landing.  I was convinced that the pilot had become lost and was flying around Hong Kong on some sort of bizarre sightseeing tour!  This landing was after an approximately 4600 mile non-stop flight from Melbourne.
Best wishes,

Hi Phil,

it could be that my friend meant this soccergate. I dont know.
Perhaps he was more concentrated on this soccerfield than on the checkerboard, because
he is very interested in soccer. :)
I will ask him when I meet him the next time.

Here's another view of the localizer antenna, I think.

Ohh. I watched this video on Hardy's website long time ago. I was still a mid school student. I like the music. To tell you the truth, hardy, I did made an windband arrangement for my own school band a year after I found this video. I used Sibelius 2. (Just to practice orchestration and to play with my friends. not for any performance) Long long time ago...I think I can find my arrangement in my old hard disc.

At that time I even didn't know who Master Hardy was. just attracted by the fantastic 744 Kai tak Landing and the wonderful music. But cuz of that, years later, I bought my first simulator game PS1. 10 years later I have PSX and now, of course, my real 744 components sim. It is amazing.

I have a thought. Since 744 is retiring and the old KaiTak time is the golden time for 747, if possible, hardy can think about to add an extra option (like the NG FMS) to add the KaiTak airport navigation data to PSX. If pilots want to practice in the real live world (like in the big sim) we can just deselect this option. While we can click it if we want to flight this historical challenging airport.

I know it is a huge work. Just an idea. And i think it is one of the big wish list for PSX members. Haha.
Thank you hardy for such a wonderful remastered version.

Oho. I feel honoured, thank you. I would love to hear or read your arrangement! Some elements in that song are really old; when I composed the chorus for the vocals, for example, I was only 16 :-) I was 28 when I recorded the complete song in the studio. That was in 1991. And the singer was 17; it was her first time in a recording studio. She had a fantastic charisma: Red curly hair and light-blue eyes, like from another planet ... :-)

(Well, the vocals are not in the Kai Tak clip.)

I second this idea and would pay an upgrade fee to have it. Sure would be easier than building the approach with the FMC every time (as in this video):

Sure. Next month I will go to old house and will bring my hard disc.
I don't know if I can find the recoding. Or I may ask my school band to make a new decorating after the covid-19.
