Hello all,

Came across this detailed video of refueling B744 at VHHH. It is quite infromative.

Enjoy!

Hmm - I'm thinking that's the next addition to the sim here in Sydney.

Wonder if we can get it ready by WorldFlight this year?

haha we have the underwing panel here too.... I keep thinking the same.

I still have that plan laying around of the tug simulator with the full simulation of the push/tow bar motion equations and interface to the racing wheel/pedals setup, plus look-up monitors.

Fueling plus tug ops is a very nice addition to the turnaround process, especially when the other kind of fuel is flowing.

Loved it, thanks!  Always interesting to learn the myriad of small details required for each overview operation we perform symbolically.

Mark and I have the same @hoppie...

We have coded the PSX.NET stuff so we could do this when we get round to it... Tug and fueling sim?

Sounds like a fun project but bottom of the list.

... wait ... refueling panel ... fuel ... that other kind of fuel ... hmmmmm...

Levels ... valves ... pressure ...

Horrendous....

"Release the deadman switch to stop the fuel flow when all the fuelling valves are closed". The #2 main tank outboard refuelling valve remained open throughout the entire video (light illuminated). According to the DDG's, this aircraft is now dangerous. The fuel jettison system is considered inoperative. The jettison system and the refuelling system use the same "plumbing".  If you jettison fuel, some of that fuel will be returned to the main #2 tank.

There are no INOP stickers on the refuelling panel, so Engineering is not aware of there being a problem. Alternate fuelling proceedures must be carried out if a valve is open. Valves can be manually closed at the valve and lockwired shut. The electrical connector must be removed, capped and stowed.

One of the hazards of videotaping yourself at work.

I sent an email to that airline's safety department. They said they would look into it. Probably the investigation will take some time.

Being an outsider, I'm not expecting a follow-up after the investigation, but hopefully something good will result.

So, when they jettison they would get a fuel imbalance, and on top of that, they might not reach the landing weight by jettison alone?

P.S.:
This aircraft got a #1 pod strike some weeks ago. Here's the video. Maybe this untightened a screw on that main tank refueling valve :-) (just kidding).

I see the system is self balancing. Jettison will stop on the low side until the high side has equalised. It will definitely slow down the jettison process, but I'm not sure if it would stop them reaching landing weight (eventually).

I guess the amount of fuel being returned to the #2 tank would depend on the relative sizes of the jettison nozzle valve/s and the refuel valve and the pressure restrictions in the plumbing branches. Even if the valve sizes and restrictions were the same, you'd think that the fuel would want to go into the #2 tank rather than go uphill to the wingtip.

Yikes... The video has been removed. I wonder if it was at the airline's request or the VHHH fuelling company's?

LOL... Someone is hiding the evidence : P

Sorry, guys...that was a useful training video.
