Title: Video of PSX Alpha 55
Post by: Hardy Heinlin on Wed, 4 Jan 2012 13:10
I just took a raw video of the iMac screen using a Canon XL1s video camera. This is  photographic material, no screenshots, that is, there are real photo exposure effects, i.e. dark areas are too dark, bright ones too bright etc. Also, the resolution is very low, and the film frame rate is only 25 fps. But I think you still might get an impression of the smooth motion of PSX. If you take the motion of that video, and take the 1:1 sharpness of the screenshots in the other forum threads, and combine both in your mind, then you might imagine the real PSX in motion :-)

Edit: Meanwhile there are two versions, the first one has a better video quality.

Version 1 on aerowinx.com (http://aerowinx.com/downloads/psxA55.mov)
720 x 576, 25 fps

Version 2 on Youtube (http://youtu.be/ezxTTERGjSE)
600 x 480, less than 20 fps

Cheers,

watching this Video I only had one question: Why still Alpha Version?

This seems to be a BIG understatement. Is there still so much stuff to do?

Hammerhart! Its really great. Thanks for publishing this.

Hardy and "old" PS friends,

First, Happy, healthy, and successful 2012 to ALL.

I am blown away by the video!!!!.  Thanks very much for posting this Hardy.  I have been following this forum with great anticipation for years, and now it appears that the end of your development process might be in sight!!!.  All I can say is that I am patiently waiting!!!! and looking forward to this masterpiece!!!  If you are looking for an additional tester, pls let me know, I am now retired, and even though I'm teaching part time, have three days a week to offer!!! I'd be most honored and happy to help in whatever way I can!!

Cheers to all,

Paul Benoit
KBOS

PS  Just read a testing topic below and see you wre all set!!!.  Way back a few years, i worked with Ralph Tofflemire on his wonderful RFP 747-200 project.  My role was to prepare the documentation, user manual, tutorials and such.  Lots of effort and lots of typing, and lots of fun.  I'd like to volunteer to support this effort if you have a requirement.  I'm not a pilot, but a good documentation person, and have a full set of 744 manuals,  and I can even type, albeit slowly.!!!!, I have a Mac Mini, multiple PCs, and an iPad, so I'm well equipped!!!

Cheers
Paul

If it helps any to ease the pain, the video does not do justice to the real PSX.

This isn't meant to be a critique, but the thing in your video that seems to interrupt the feeling of immersion is that the camera (or the image) doesn't bounce up and down in turbulence, or overshoot its target due to inertia, or respond to changing G-forces as the plane accelerates (including in turns).  If that visual effect were there, it would be hard to say that you weren't watching a real aircraft cockpit.  Again, nice job.

Hi Hardy,

You are creating a drug which makes addicted! That is absolutely evil!
That's like presenting delicious sausages to a dog out of range.

One question though:
At approx 5:04 you seem to pitch up from approx 5 to 12 deg. But on the radar the terrain reflections(?) do not seem to change intensity. Is the radar "stabilised" in relation to the pitch axis or is this pitch change not significant enough?

Anyway, I hope this product will reward you for all your enthusiasm and effort very soon!

Regards, Holger

Good evening,

again, many thanks for your positive response, gentlemen! I didn't expect that. Seems we're on a good heading, that's a good motivation, too.

Will, I thought the same, I'll try to hold the camera in my hand next time. This time I used a tripod because I had difficulties to move the mouse at the same time :-) I hit the tripod with my elbow a couple of times, though; there you have some vibrations :-)

Holger, the radar antenna does not move with the aircraft pitch, the antenna is stabilized by gyros within a large tolerance angle. The antenna tilt the crew selects is always relative to the ground, not to the nose. By the way, the video doesn't show radar, it's EGPWS terrain. The colors change because the aircraft changes its altitude. The higher it gets, the greener the map.

Cheers,

While doing videos in the fixed-base sims, we found it particularly effective to carefully hand-move the camera in sync with expected aircraft virtual motion.

In 2003 in the Sydney sim, then still fixed-base, there was a small camera fixed to the flight deck bulkhead. By chance I found out that banging the bulkhead shook the camera in quite the right way to enhance a virtual touchdown. Since then, bulkhead banging became standard practice in Sydney, until the hydraulics arrived.

Hardy, first of all, I can't express how amazed I am. In my opinion, PSX is already revolutionary. It's graphics are not only highly detailed, they are artwork. And it's not only eye-candy what we see, but highly functional and realistic. I haven't seen any comsumer or even prosumer software yet that is both so good-looking and realistic at once, besides that it's a masterpiece of programming (as it seems: a well-designed user interface, low system resources footprint, network integration, ...).

When I first watched the video I got a bit irritated by the tilted camera angle and asked myself why you did not just use a screen recording tool ... but actually, the tilted view gives the cockpit even more depth. So there's the artist again.

I am looking forward to any further developments, keep on the good work and keep the joy you have in doing it.

Cheers

Dennis

Thank you, Dennis. Nice to hear this from a designer (checked your profile).

At first, I didn't want to make a video, but just photographs with a camera. In the past years we always compared photographs of the real flightdeck with screenshots of PSX, i.e. photographs versus screenshots. I thought for a better evaluation the PSX pictures should not be screenshots, but photographs, with the same photographic effects as the real flightdeck pictures show. With over- and underexposure, slight geometric distortion etc. Screenshots use to look sterile.

Hehehe, re lips ... it's a shame I can't show you the lips under the throttles and the flap lever, they look better (tighter), but they are almost hidden by the wide objects on the levers.

Cheers,

|-|ardy

P.S.: The Mac screen recorder has only 10 FPS or so. Full screen at high res is a lot of work and memory for a recorder.

Wow, Hardy, I think you deserve even more compliments now.  Throughout the whole video, I was thinking that the real "Canon" camera was looking head-on at the screen of your Mac, while the "virtual" camera of PSX was sitting in the FO seat.  And wow, Hardy, the force of that illusion is really strong.  I've never seen a 2D panel before that actually had me convinced it was a 3D panel.  I had to go hunting for evidence that it was actually a 2D panel!

Have been using 744 PS since version 1.2 and following your project silently.

Congratulations on this masterpiece of art and code, I really appreciate your "clean" and lean approach to panel design.

Looking very much forward to your new sim, and looking at the current commercial flight sims (FSX still being a lame duck, Flight! becoming an arcade game, Airline Simulator 3 having been Vaporware forever and X-Plane 10 becoming an endless beta gain), the product will have huge chances for an economic success, even in the casual simmers market.

Just added Mozart to the video on Youtube. Surprisingly, the music matches the video here and there. Whereever synchronity occurs, it's pure coincidence.

When I'm retired, perhaps I'll be creating my own symphony and a special flight deck video suitable for this very music.

Mozart? Mozart???

What happened to "Shine On You Crazy Diamond"?

Which is, among other things, a thinly veiled allegory on the simulation software development process especially in the shape of HH's ordeal, even with oblique allusions to PS1 (dev) times and the unknown PSX release date, etc. etc.

Remember when you were young, you shone like the sun.

You were caught on the cross fire of childhood and stardom,

Better give me a violin, I'm one of those guys who don't want to have a wooden block between the string and the finger tip :-)

I must say, this Mozart stuff works only well if you hear it LOUD, as loud as the environment of a real flight deck in flight.

Hardy, one question regarding the GUI / interaction design:

It seems to me that one has multiple options of turning knobs, moving levers et cetera. The mouse cursor either changes or gets an extra symbol added. Would you mind to post a few screenshots of these various cursors? Would you further mind to explain which options of mouse interaction the PSX jockey will have?

Best regards
Dennis

There are ca. 50 different mouse icons, I'd like to keep them secret for a while :-) I can tell you what they indicate, for example, whether the button under the cursor is an alternate action or momentary action switch, for the latter also if it's a hold type or click type switch, then there are tips indicating a switch guard etc. There are icons for rotating knobs, inner ring, outer ring ... etc. ... for CB in, out, collar setting ... for dragging a lever, or a speedbug ... for yoke and tiller ... for panel panning ... etc.

Cheers,

Well, 50 icons is way more than I expected. They seem to be designed very well, so I'm not worried that they couldn't be clear enough. Very cool. I suppose the available options do always depend on the control type, so I withdraw my question and am looking forward to see further videos or screenshots or whatever. The GUI concept of PSX is in my opinion the best I've seen on a flight simulator so far. This is keeping me curious  :D

Thats correct. 気 is the Japanese variant of the Chinese 气 in simplified or 氣 in traditional (qi wich is gas)

Hello, just wondering whether PSX could became a platform for other developers... because it will have resources like realistic ATC and weather (Collins met radar), not to mention a realistic flight dynamics... We know hardcore simmers are orphans now, as Microsoft abandoned FSX development.
Anyway, I'm following your work for years now...

Thanks,

Teo Halfen

Hello Teo,

PSX may, indeed, inspire developers to make add-ons. Variables can be easily read from the PSX network.

Quote... because it will have resources like realistic ATC ...
I'm not sure what you have in mind. Can you be more specific?

Please note that the ATC simulation is not implemented yet and that it has a very low priority on my to-do list. I haven't annunciated an ATC model at all. If I add it at the end, it will be very simplified (not a training tool for real world controllers). I think the Internet with real humans provides the better ATC nowadays.

Cheers,

Do mean developers could program other 744 variables or also other models like the B737 or A320?

Quote from: Hardy HeinlinI'm not sure what you have in mind. Can you be more specific?

PS1 has a built-in ATC that is able to vector you, give clearences, holdings and inform ATIS etc. So I imagined PSX would have a similar ATC, what in my opinion is a realistic ATC. But you are right, real humans provide better ATC nowadays, althought I've never tried it.

I'm not in a hurry about PSX, realism is more important and the 744 manual is very big and complex  :) . By the way, I'm obtaining a private pilot licence and attending an aircraft mechanics course.

Thanks,

Teo Halfen

You mean you could use parts of the PSX flight deck (radio panels, NDs etc.) in simulations of other aircraft types?

Well, PSX is not designed for such an universal use. That would be a step back to the compromises of a multi aircraft type simulator.

Nevertheless, the question is interesting. Theoretically, there may be options to get some PSX parts integrated in other aircraft types, but you need to know the systems very well. E.g. for the ND, you need to overwrite PSX's internal FMC position with the FMC position of your, say, B737 FMC. But the map and route data, and failures etc., will remain connected to PSX's aircaft systems unless you overwrite them as well. This is highly complex. Way more complex than the ND graphics alone. So, if you want to save development time for a 737 ND by using PSX's ND, you actually save only 1% of the time. 99% of the time is still needed to work out the system logic and electronics (EIU, IRS, FMS, GPS, radios, electrical busses, data busses, ADC, data source selection logic etc. pp.).

Edit: Or simply move the whole PSX aircraft as is, with the position of your other aircraft type. Let the PSX IRS, GPS, FMC position go their way with it. Still, it remains a 744 system. In the end you could just replace the sticker by "737" and pretend it's a 737 :-)

I think its a great idea to stay outside of the ATC realm as the world of phraseology in an entirely new realm of technical mayhem, and that's assuming that you don't allow for, shall we say ICAO variations:

Heard recently on Sydney Approach "Approach good morning, United eight thirty nine, out of Eighteen down to ten got the field"

Followed by a longer than usual pause......

Nothing is as standard as ATC phraseology. Your example is beautifull example of what is called "slang", used by pilots from one specific continent thinking it is acceptable to do worldwide.  I guess that continent needs another Tenerife-alike accident, because they forgot about PAN-AM and the importance of understandable ATC conversations a long time ago...

Anyway, let's not get into french speaking countries where "cap deux-dix" is actually legally accepted. But they at least go international standard when crossing boundaries :-).

It's been a while since I've had a look here and this video has absolutely blown me away.  I've not touched a flight simulator for years but I put a lot of time into flying earlier versions of PS1 and will be happy to buy this once it's released.

Hardy - On a 27" iMac, how much scrolling around will be needed for full control?

To see the complete flight deck?

Depends on your zoom setting :-)

Note that the various flight deck areas can be accessed not only by panning, you can also make layout presets and assign a key or joystick button to each of them.

A layout can be divided into subframes, up to 4, each subframe with its own zoom and location and panning function. The frame dividers can be seen on some of the screenshots.

In practice, think in flight phase. You have nine very easily accessible layout presets that you use to assist in certain phases and they switch instantly. Within the phase, you use the four subframes and tyically you don't touch them. There is near-zero scrolling required in this way. Would be disastrous anyway.

Three 27" iMacs are nicer though

Oh yes, three together would be very pretty, would that be running PSX on each one and them all be linked together?

What about a single iMac with a second 24" monitor?  Can panels be shifted around between monitors like that?

They're not three 27" iMacs but... I'm sure they're going to work fine with this new sim!

By the way... is PSX compatible with apple trackpad gestures? It will support zooming with pinches? Rotate a knob rotating fingers in the trackpad and so on?

Tried PSX this morning on 27" and the display is perfect all the mouse functions work the same as a windows setup.
Fully zoomed in to the panel you could not even see the pixals until I got a magnifying glass and looked at them, very smooth.  ;)

Will the future PSX be multiplatform / multilicense?
I've got OS X, Win 7.
Have I got to buy 2 copies (one for OS X and one for windows OSs) or one copy/license will allow me to install it in both iMac and Pc?

Thanks!

No.

Special multi-licenses are required only for larger setups like university classrooms or multiple rooms, or if more than [?] PSX instances are used in a network.

I haven't thought about license details yet. I'll do this when the product is finished :-)

Thanks,

Hi Hardy,

As I am not sure how will PSX run for Home Cockpit sim, single or multi license, will there be a version / license for home cockpit / Non commercial setups (which might require a networked setup)

Some sw is released on the market in a single DVD regardless the OS, other sw is released in a OS specific DVD

Thanks!  :)
