Title: How to add Kai Tak to PSX and test the IGS
Post by: Hardy Heinlin on Mon, 10 May 2021 22:19
Good evening,

to follow this tutorial, you need PSX update 10.134 or higher (https://aerowinx.com/board/index.php?topic=4191.0), and Aerowinx Navburo (https://aerowinx.com/board/index.php?topic=6371.0).

In this tutorial we'll use the sample files that Navburo generates and two files from Gary Oliver's GitHub site (https://aerowinx.com/board/index.php?topic=6374.0) (approach and gate files).

1 - Navburo tasks

Start PSX and Navburo.

In Navburo, go to step 1, and in the edit field enter this name: 2003 with Kai Tak

Click Make. Go directly to step 4.

In step 4, click all 16 buttons that have the label Make sample file. Your text editor will open 16 new files generated by Navburo.

Close all 16 files in your text editor to clean up your desktop.

In Navburo step 4, on the file list, double-click Part15-Approach.txt; it will re-appear in your text editor.

Erase the entire text in Part15-Approach.txt.

In Navburo step 4, on the file list, double-click Part12-Gate.txt which will also re-appear in your text editor.

This gate sample file contains six special text lines starting with SPACP VHHXVHB*... These are fake lights for the curved approach lighting to runway 13. They appear in the PSX scenery in blue and won't flash, and they also appear on the Instructor's gates list with the * identifiers. Of course, there should be no gates on the roofs of the city, but -- if you want to keep this little cheating, delete just the other text lines (in Part12-Gate.txt). If not, delete the entire text.

2 - Internet tasks

In your Internet browser go to:
https://github.com/goliver1984/PSX.Navdata.Custom

On that site, click Simfest-VHHX-KaiTak-9604 which opens a list.

On that list, click Part15-Approach.txt.

In that Part15-Approach.txt select all text lines starting with SPACP VHHXVHFG13...

Copy the selected text and paste it in your text editor's blank Part15-Approach.txt file.

Click Save in your text editor.

In your browser, click the Back button to return to the list, and on that list click Part12-Gate.txt.

In that Part12-Gate.txt select all text lines starting with TPACP VHHXVHB...

Copy the selected text and paste it in your text editor's Part12-Gate.txt (before the * gates if you keep those fake lights in).

Click Save in your text editor.

3 - Back to Navburo

Go to Navburo step 6 and uncheck Block all fillings.

Click Autostart.

4 - Instructor tasks

When all Build buttons in Navburo are renamed to Rebuild, go to PSX, Instructor > About and select the database named 2003 with Kai Tak.

Go to Instructor > Situation > Load and load this file:
04 Approach 002 - Real-world weather - Hong Kong.situ

Go to Instructor > Situation > Weather > VHHH (or any other zone) and uncheck Set zones by flight track ...

Click ISA and Wind calm and CAVOK.

Click To planet and To zones (to be sure all world areas now have this weather setting).

5 - On the flight deck

Go to the PSX flight deck and press the N key to reset all baro instruments to the local QNH.

Push TOGA, select flaps 20.

When positive rate, select gear up.

On the MCP engage FLCH and HDG HOLD.

Freeze the sim motion by pressing the M key.

Select the FMC's first RTE page and enter VHHX in 1R.

Push the DEP/ARR key, then select VHHX ARR> in 2R, then IGS13 in 1R.

Wait a second, then select CH INTC> in 6R which brings you to the LEGS page.

On the LEGS, go to page 2/2 and downselect HKOM1 from 1L.

Press the LEGS key to get to page 1, then upselect HKOM1 to 1L.

Press 6R to get an intercept course of 088°, then press EXEC.

Note that in the 1990s the IGS course was 088°. As we're using the latest magnetic variation data today, the FMC will autoset 089° on the NAV RAD page.

On the EFIS control panel, remove the MINS RADIO by turning it down to -1.

Set the MINS outer ring to BARO mode, then set the MINS BARO to 600 feet by rotating the inner ring.

Press the M key to unfreeze the motion.

Set the MCP speed to 190, select flaps 10, then 5.

On the MCP select APP.

When the G/S engages at 5000, set flaps 10 and speed 170.

At 3000, select gear down, flaps 20, speed 160.

Now it's a good time to save a situ file.

At 2500, set flaps 30 and speed 155.

Under the F/O's ND, click the TERR OVRD switch twice (the first click to open the guard, the second click to push the button). We need to override that terrain look-ahead warning as we know what we're doing. The look-ahead system was installed on the 744 only after the Kai Tak era anyway.

If you're using a PSX layout for the captain's side, you may now move the center post to the left, left of the approach lights. Just drag it while holding the right mouse button. But don't drag it too far. Keep the rest of the scenery within the subframe.

Set the ND range to 5 (maximum zoom).

Before 1000 feet RA, disconnect the A/T and the A/P, and keep following the IGS on course 089°.

At KL DME 0.8, switch the FD off, and roll to the right to a bank angle of 10°. Maintain sinkrate 900 fpm.

On the ND, check that the white trend vector (the "worm") keeps touching the runway centerline.

Before the flare, if you have quick fingers, hit the 0 key on the numpad to reset the center post.

Good luck!

6 - Another attempt in Cathay style?

Reload the situ file that you just saved.

When you approach the middle marker, fly slightly left of the IGS course, maybe half a dot, and start the final turn a bit later, at 0.7 DME, and bank to 12°. Cathay made their turns later, and farther away from the runway (closer to the checkerboard), and steeper to get a longer straight-in, with more time to stabilize the final part.

Best wishes.

Thank you Hardy and Gary.

I have been waiting for this for quite a while.

I am on my phone, so I cannot get too deep into all the files involved.

Will the above procedure add all of Kai Tak (runway, navaids, all approaches, etc.) or just the runway, IGS 13 approach, and IGS 13 approach lights?

Best regards,

Mariano

Just a few sample records. However, Simfest's gate file has many gates, maybe all gates.

There are still navaids and some waypoints in the Kai Tak area in real life and in the default database today.

We have also started work on the SID and STARS and will add these to the github, however if anyone beats us to it then please feel free to add them.

I might have a file somewhere with all the coded procedures & individual fixes from the days when I used to upload them for AVSIM users to use with the PMDG series of simulations (well over 10 years ago). I'll have to go digging on an old removable HDD.

The info is coded in decimal LATLON format. Not sure if this would be of use?

I wrote a program to convert LAT/LON Decimal to ARINC LAT/LON so shouldn't be an issue.

Gary,

I'll have a dig around tonight .... if I find it I'll email it to you.

Thank you both, Hardy and Gary.
The best instruction page I ever saw. Its a special pleasure for me to frequent Kai Tak again.

Hi Hardy,

Thanks for the tutorial. I'm just wondering if there's a way to merge data from several sources (e.g. VHHX and the US data) into a single database. Do we just merge the individual part files together?

Thanks.

Sure, every part file can be a worldwide part file. E.g. open the approach part file which was extracted from the FAA master, and in that approach part file add the approach records of VHHX, i.e. add them before or after the USA records. When all part files are done, rebuild the binary files in step 6.

In the GitHub I've put a sample script that will merge multiple datasets together for you.

Cheers

Gary,

You have an email with the file.
