In light of this variety, I must ask again: Would you consider the UPS, Cirrus, Lido, and Asiana formats the most popular ones?

Hardy,

Dont get confused about the wind data output ... PFPX can only create the formats I have shown you - Huey Louie & Dewie.

They get inserted into whichever template I write DLH, ABW, VIR SQC etc .... all of the above list contain either Huey Louie or Dewie.

There are some OFPs out in the real world don't have wind data blocks, the wind data is loaded in real life via data link - imagine that!  DLH is one of them ... I have added a Huey Louie or Dewie to that template to make it easier for the virtual pilot.

Remember I showed you with a series of screen shots that the PFPX user can switch between formats to display Huey Louie or Dewie (so the wind data can be copied as a txt file) before the user commits to choosing the OFP format, filing, releasing & printing the flight plan.

I see. Thanks.

Meanwhile we have four aloft formats, not three, right? (The Simbrief sample is just another Cirrus.) I guess the fourth one is then Uncle Donald.

Post by: G-CIVA on Thu, 26 Jul 2018 13:06
Uncle Donald - yes!

I have just discovered a further format amongst the array of PFPX syntax .... its a very basic one ... it does appear in some default PFPX OFP templates that come shipped with the product ... it might be safer to include it .... can I post it as code in the original thread?

Apologies for missing it ... I dont normally use the format - hence the reason I missed it.

Its now posted in the original thread.

Gentlemen,

Thanks for the comments.

Today I have updated some of the OFP Templates, the changes are mainly cosmetic.  I have also updated all of the aircraft type files (11 in all)

What you need to do if you have contacted me & have downloaded these files

Firstly ensure that PFPX has been shut down on your computer.

1. Navigate to the Dropbox Folder called PFPX Files for PSX, find the subfolder inside named 'Aircraft Types', open it & copy the 15 files inside.

On you computer that has PFPX installed find the folder where PFPX is installed - normally:

C:\Users\Public\Documents\PFPX Data

Inside find the folder named 'Aircraft Types' & paste in the 15 aircraft type files there overwriting as required.

2. Navigate to the Dropbox Folder called PFPX Files for PSX, find the subfolder inside named 'Flightplan Templates - do not overwrite', open it & copy the 15 files inside.

On you computer that has PFPX installed find the folder where PFPX is installed - normally:

C:\Users\Public\Documents\PFPX Data

Inside find the folder named 'Flightplan Templates' & copy the 15 flightplan template files there overwriting as required.

After this you can start up PFPX & everything should be good.

Enjoy!

thank you for the files very much.

Just one question: In the folders 'Aircaft Types' and 'Flightplan Templates' are 15 files each, is this o.k.?

I have a question regarding the Cirrus OFP format.

Usually, in most of the flight plan formats you'll find a column containing the estimated fuel onboard at each waypoint (so you can easily compare the actual fuel onboad with the calculated figure at each waypoint passage).

In the Cirrus format, it's different - the OFP just gives the amount of fuel required for each waypoint. That means that one has to add the sum of contigency and reserve fuel to the value?

Is there a reason for this? I find it a bit unsual but maybe that's just because I'm used to the other OFPs.

Best regards,
Dirk

Gentlemen,

Today I have updated ALL of the OFP Templates, the changes are mainly cosmetic but ensure that the heading text for the flight plan log fields propagate to all pages containing flight plan log information.

I have also included a Qantas Airlines B744/ER OFP Template (thanks to Rudy Fidado for allowing me to use some of his work).  Some of the Qantas flight plan fields are beyond the scope of PFPX as its currently stands but it is still a very fair representation of the real deal.  I have also included an El Al OFP Template (thanks to Doug Snow for allowing me to use some of his work).

I have also updated four of the aircraft - the El Al registrations 4X-ELA, 4X-ELB, 4X-ELC & 4X-ELD in order that these will work correctly with the El Al OFP template.

What you need to do if you have contacted me & have downloaded these files

Firstly ensure that PFPX has been shut down on your computer.

1. Navigate to the Dropbox Folder called PFPX Files for PSX, find the subfolder inside named 'Aircraft ', open it & copy the 4 files inside named 4X-ELA, 4X-ELB, 4X-ELC & 4X-ELD.

On you computer that has PFPX installed find the folder where PFPX is installed - normally:

C:\Users\Public\Documents\PFPX Data

Inside find the folder named 'Aircraft' & paste in the 4 aircraft files there overwriting as required.

2. Navigate to the Dropbox Folder called PFPX Files for PSX, find the subfolder inside named 'Flightplan Templates - do not overwrite', open it & copy the 17 files inside.

On you computer that has PFPX installed find the folder where PFPX is installed - normally:

C:\Users\Public\Documents\PFPX Data

Inside find the folder named 'Flightplan Templates' & copy the 17 flight plan template files there overwriting as required.

After this you can start up PFPX & everything should be good.

Hi everyone!

After many years since PS1.3, and also upon retirement (a lot of time available for what matters in this life...), I'm back to Aerowinx, now with PSX.

I've received the CD a couple of weeks ago, and have to say it's amazing!!!

Congratulations to Hardy Heinlin for this masterpiece!!!

Over the last days, I've been trying to get the PFPX & Aircraft Model Files http://aerowinx.com/board/index.php?topic=4820.0 but did not succeed. Yes, I've already e-mailed the author twice, but no return. Maybe his e-mail has changed...

Could anyone here help me get those indispensable files?

Cheers!

Hi Cooper,

Thanks for replying!

That first link ultimately sends me back to the same place...

I suspect that the forum email system might not be working properly, or I am missing something.
The author of those files - Steve Bell - didn't reply to my two emails. As a test, I tried to send me an email and it also didn't arrive...

Anyway, if someone could help me accessing those files I'd appreciate it.

Regards,

Claudio

I think the reason you cannot access those files is because the "owner" has to send you the Dropbox link that allow you to download them.
You cannot download them if he don't give you access persmission.

Steve, thanks again for all your efforts.

I'm wondering if you can tell me just in broad strokes what kinds of differences you see between performance in the passenger and freighter versions, when weight, engines, and everything else are kept equal. I'd suppose the only differences (please correct me if I'm wrong) would be due the longer upper deck on the passenger version. Maybe this contributes to extra drag? Maybe not? Your thoughts would be appreciated.

Hardy, feel free to contribute.

Thanks guys.

The freighter's shorter upper deck causes a tiny little pitch-down when above Mach 0.86; but it's too small to be noticeable in the sim, and it's compensated by the freighter's Mach trim * anyway so that you won't notice any difference at all.

Will,

Thanks...the work has been a pleasure for me since I've benefited too!

The FPPM documents purely deal with fuel burn & performance numbers based upon engine type across the entire performance range capability of the airframe. This takes into account the much higher design structural landing weight capability of the Freighter. The only minor differences in the performance tables are the additional columns of weight increase for ERF & ER passenger variations.

Some tables are type specific - such as emergency crew & passenger oxygen capability & within these tables there are even options for additional emergency oxygen bottles. Some operators opted for these to allow them to fly on particular routes.

With regard to the actual performance tables (I have now studiously transposed each one as accurately as possible within the confines of what PFPX allows) there is virtually no difference in fuel burn between a PW 4056/4062 or a GE CF680C2B1F/CF680C2B5F engine.

I am going to have another look at the PW CLB data in the next month just to make sure that everything is correct.

As we speak I am adjusting the FF/DRAG bias calculations for all the PFPX model files. This is based on data I collected using the APMS function of PFPX. The PSX models should be flown with a 0/0 FF/DRAG factor with PFPX calculations offset accordingly. I use the PSX Wind Corridor Function & use the PFPX Flight Plan wind data entered into the PSX wind corridor.

This process will be an ongoing commitment by me.

Post by: Will on Thu, 2 Sep 2021 15:07
Thanks Steve, that's very helpful.

I'm curious about whether you find the APMS functionality of PFPX to be useful. There is a user over on the PFPX forum who seems to be pretty well-informed about the software (I think he may have even been a beta tester or otherwise somehow close to the developers) and he said that the APMS isn't all that helpful when the performance file is well-written (meaning it matches the manufacturer's specs). Instead, he recommends flying a few routes and then updating fuel and drag biases based on average differences at the end of some flown sectors.

To me this makes sense, as the AFPM seems a bit unwieldy, in that you'd get various drag and bias values for a various weights and altitudes, and then have to decide how to put all of those together in one final pair of numbers. (E.g. just an average? Or a weighted average taking into consideration how much time on a typical sector is spent in the modal flight altitudes? And so on.) Another PFPX user went so far as to make a table that let you interpolate fuel/drag bias as a function of deviation from ISO.

To my knowledge, none of the above individuals were using PSX, for what that's worth.

Anyway thanks again for helping bridge two excellent pieces of software.

Will,

Quote from: Will on Thu,  2 Sep 2021 15:07To my knowledge, none of the above individuals were using PSX, for what that's worth.

That might be the crux of the issue...?

The APMS function needs a little bit manipulation to get good numbers .

If you look at the model files that I have uploaded with APMS data included (within your PFPX model file list) you will see that I used an average taken over the total time. The feature takes some manipulation & patience to yield decent figures.

Lots of simmers just don't fly the 744 on sectors on durations sufficient enough to yield decent numbers to play with (no criticism intended).

That's why the FPPMs contain quick reference short range cruise tables & such like.

To obtain good numbers from scratch you need to fly long sectors with accurate weather & wind data inside the PSX environment that matches the PFPX OFPs.

QuoteTherefore flight planning within PFPX with the PW engine variants using my model files can only be conducted with LRC, M.85 & M.86 cruise options.

Steve, an operational question for you. If I'm going to fly at M.86, and flightplan that accordingly with PFPX, what do I put in the FMC for cost index during the preflight?

I know I can go into SEL SPD on the VNAV page and put in 0.86 for cruise, but before that page is active (e.g. on the ground during preflight), what would I put in the PERF INIT for a cost index? I think you'd want the FMC to give you a fairly accurate prediction of the trip fuel before departure...?
Title: Re: *Update 30 Aug 21* PFPX Files & Aircraft Model Files for PSX NG FMC Upgrade
Post by: G-CIVA on Sun, 5 Sep 2021 05:44
That's part of the problem I encountered with the proprietary FPPM data I have available for the PW 4056/4062 engine. There is no Cost Index data available. I do have access to proprietary FPPM Cost Index data for GE & RR engines.

What to do?

SWAG? (Scientific Wild Arsed Guess)

Or, during FMS pre flight enter xxx/.86 as the ECON CLB SPD on the CLB Page, .86 on the CRZ Page & something sensible like .860/290 on the DES Page.

With your PSX wind corridor loaded & wind data uplinked into the LEGs page you should get a sensible fuel at destination figure on the PROG Page.

Slightly unrealistic...but that's the price you pay to get accurate fuel burn figures. The other option is a native PFPX aircraft file that contains some cost index figures that are wildly inaccurate (in some cases by several thousands of kgs per engine per hour).

Now I have the FPPM data in an aircraft file I will start to accumulate further APMS data to fine tune the bias numbers.
Title: Re: *Update 30 Aug 21* PFPX Files & Aircraft Model Files for PSX NG FMC Upgrade
Post by: Will on Sun, 5 Sep 2021 14:54
As we know, all you need before takeoff are figures that are somewhat predictive and reassuring(*), and your on-the-ground predictions will be overridden by in-flight predictions once you are in the air.

So my SWAG -- please someone correct me if I'm wrong -- is that for preflight, people would pick a CI on the high side, one they think would result in M0.86 at cruise. Maybe 250? Something like that?

But I do like the idea of configuring the VNAV pages for the desired cruise speed ASAP.

*) Maybe the aircraft's pre-departure fuel predictions are not so relevant? I recall talking to a 737 pilot who told me that if the FMC and the OFP disagree on the predicted burn prior to departure, the FMC's predictions are to be disregarded and the OFP is controlling. Once the aircraft hits real weather and has its engines turning, then the on-board FMC predictions take over, unless they disagree too much with the crew's dead reckoning, lol.

Title: Re: *Update 01 Feb 22* PFPX Files & Aircraft Model Files for PSX NG FMC Upgrade
Post by: Will on Wed, 2 Feb 2022 16:33
Steve, I have two quick questions for you.

First, I had the pleasure of flying some full long-haul flights in PSX recently. Normally I can't finish a full 15-hour flight but I was able to do this a time or two in the last few weeks, and I noticed that PSX and PFPX were basically in full agreement about the fuel consumption enroute. I'm using the latest version of your 747-400 passenger GE performance file for PFPX, and the agreement was really excellent throughout the whole cruise portion.

However, in each case, the approach (starting at TOD and going until landing) took about 6000 more lbs of fuel than predicted by PFPX. Could be any number of factors here -- weather, primarily, or unpredicted time spent at intermediate altitudes, the speed schedule in the descent, etc. So my question is this: given what you know about PFPX, should I expect that the fuel burn would be as predicted under ideal circumstances? Or are there any known issues with fuel predictions in the final phase of the flight?

My second question has to do with TOPCAT and I understand that you may not have any idea here. But just in case you or someone else does... I note that the N1 predictions for the GE engines are off by a percent or two when compared to the N1 commanded by the FMC. In other words, feeding the PSX weather into TOPCAT, with the same derate, and same runway, calculating N1 for takeoff might give 102.3% in TOPCAT, whereas the FMC commands 104.1%. In this case, should I just assume that TOPCAT isn't perfect and that PSX has the better numbers? Or should I trust TOPCAT in the same way that one would trust the OFP's number for V2 over the FMC value (since the dispatch office has more data to feed into the equation than the FMC does)?

Thanks.

Will,

Will,

With regard to your first Q ... a couple for you to clarify things:

1. When you were conducting your flight planning process did you take into account the extra tack mileage for SID/STAR WPTs added to the RTE?

2. At Release did you copy the WPT Wind data from your PFPX FP & insert it into a PSX 'Wind Corridor' using the PSX Weather Menu Tab?

3. Did you uplink the WPTs WINDS into the RTE in the PSX FMS?

4. Did you fly the planned profile?

TOPCAT - I dont use it.

Best

Steve

Post by: Will on Thu, 3 Feb 2022 14:09
Hi Steve,

1. Yes, the expected STAR waypoints were in the OFP and in the FMC.
2. Yes, I set up a wind corridor. (Hardy: Very powerful feature, by the way, thanks for it.)
3. Yes, winds were uplinked for both cruise and descent.
4. Did I fly the planned profile? Errr...... mostly.

There were three variables that changed, for sure. One was the vertical profile: I couldn't maintain M0.84/340 in a constant descent the whole way from FL390 to the ground without intermediate level-offs. Another was the weather, as the local conditions begin to become more determinative than the wind corridor. And the third variable was the route: there were certainly some deviations from the flight plan as the aircraft got closer to the terminal area.

I'm not complaining about any of this, and I know that operational factors lead to differences from the planned performance. I'm just curious about how PFPX matches in the descent under ideal conditions. Of course I could test this myself with some controlled experiments, but I thought you'd know.

If PFPX matches PSX in the descent and landing to the same degree that PFPX matches PSX in cruise, then I can deduce that the combination of weather and profile alterations simply added 6000 lbs of fuel burn to the trip. This would be good to know.

TOPCAT - I dont use it.

Out of curiosity, Steve. What are you using for calculating Takeoff/Landing performance?
Thanks!

I have on file copies of old school Paper Take Off Data Cards & quite a lot of legacy FPPM/company specific PERF Charts info for all 3 engine variants

So it's a pencil, paper, chart(s) & calculator effort. As with the landing data calculations.

In this case, should I just assume that TOPCAT isn't perfect and that PSX has the better numbers? Or should I trust TOPCAT in the same way that one would trust the OFP's number for V2 over the FMC value (since the dispatch office has more data to feed into the equation than the FMC does)?

Hi Will,

Sorry for this late reply, but I was away from home (and my computers) for several days. About TOPCAT...:

I haven't really looked at N1 percentages but I did look extensively at take-off V-speeds and AutoBrake landing distances as calculated by TOPCAT, while comparing the results to numbers taken from KLM's (obsolete) AOM and/or FCOM.
- TOPCAT V-speeds are usually within 1 or 2 knots from what can be found in the KLM manuals.
- AutoBrake landing distances by TOPCAT, however, are not correct and sometimes off by up to 50 %.

Some examples of this:

Landing in Bogotá (SKBO) RWY 13R, LAW 249779 kg, W/V 040/07, OAT +12C, Flaps 30
AUTO 1   AUTO 2   AUTO 3   AUTO 4   AUTO MAX
2659       2249       1939      1640       1354            TOPCAT
3954       3557       3142      2702       2179            KLM

Landing in Nairobi (HKJK) RWY06, LAW 243694 kg, W/V 080/13, OAT +25C, Flaps 30
AUTO 1   AUTO 2   AUTO 3   AUTO 4   AUTO MAX
3512       2930      2520       2117      1730             TOPCAT
3487       3151      2822       2421      1975             KLM

Landing in Amsterdam (EHAM) RWY27, LAW 251984 kg, W/V 240/18, OAT +11C, Flaps 30
AUTO 1   AUTO 2   AUTO 3   AUTO 4   AUTO MAX
3340       2804      2400       2025      1651             TOPCAT
2669       2491      2328       1998      1676             KLM

Predicted distances by KLM closely match the performance in PSX: if you plan to exit at a certain rapid-exit taxiway and set the autobrake selector accordingly, that is where you will be able to exit.
TOPCAT doesn't recognize FAOR (Johannesburg), you need to enter the former ICAO code (FAJS); nor does it have details for SEQM (Quito), to name just a few.

I trust my numbers over those, as calculated by TOPCAT.

Regards,
Simon (hoping the lay-out remains as I see it in the preview)

Okay, that's good to know. It's too bad that TOPCAT's performance files can't be updated.

You know you can download the most current Runway DB from Navigraph correct?

For example I have the Navigraph 2201 Rev 1 Runway DB, and lo and behold, there is FAOR...

Granted, I dont know what EODPs they are using, sometimes they appear as the missed approach and not a true EODP. The only time I enter EODPs is for Worldflight,

The thing is, TOPCAT's data for the 744 is derived from/made for the PMDG 747 for FSX. I have no idea which source for landing performance information they used, but I doubt it's close to the actual numbers due to FSX's flawed ground friction. This could explain the differences Simon is talking about.

I wish there were a good alternative to TOPCAT for PSX (both for takeoff and landing), as tables from FCOMs and FPPMs for each engine model are almost impossible to find online, sadly.

The realism of the default autobrake deceleration settings (PSX manual page 486) can be checked pretty easily: Just measure the green airspeed trend vector on the PFD speed tape. Of course, the vector too must work correctly; that can be checked with a clock (how many knot tape marks are passed in ten seconds?). In PSX, the deceleration model and the related indication too are mathematically 100% correct. Minor random variations may appear like in real life due to variable wind or ground friction which the IRS and the brake pressure have to react to like an autopilot does with the flight controls. When the ground friction decreases, the brake pressure should increase, and vice versa -- to maintain the set default deceleration.

Hi,

If anybody can supply an original genuine OHK OFP I can probably parse a decent facsimile through PFPX & create a template, but I have no idea what the OFP looks like.

Hi Steve and all,

some of the forum members that use gmail will not receive mails from the Aerowinx forum as Google keeps blocking Aerowinx (without reason). They don't even reach their spam folder. Not always, but sometimes. As I maintain the forum system, I sometimes get system error messages regarding mails that could not be delivered by Aerowinx. Members that use the forum's mail form should note that the form is sent via Aerowinx (to hide the member's mail address). So mailing a member directly via a private mail program would be better (provided the address is known).

Best wishes,

Gmail blocks any email domain that does not have full security configuration using DKIM and SPF records. I cannot send emails to gmail users as my personal domain does not support these authentication methods.
