New posts since last visit

In the 'old' forum, as soon as we entered we could see if there were any new messages, and how many.

Can this work here ?

it seems we get two hints as to "new stuff since latest visit":

1. The big "bulb" (globular icon with ">" in it) in front of a topic will be "lit up" (changed from normal blue to bright yellow) if new messages have been added to the topic since your latest visit.

2. There will be a similar but smaller (and always unlit) "bulb" icon right in front of the topic heading text; if you click on that, you'll be transported directly to the first unread (by you) message in that topic.

Not quite what you are after, I suspect (the "how many" part is missing), but it does help.

Pretty much every other forum I visit has a link somewhere that I can click to return all threads with posts since my last visit.  That way I don't have to 'find' posts, I simply work down the list

e.g. in the Worldflight forum, on the right hand side above the 'Last Post' column is a link to 'View posts since last visit'.

And this brings me to another query; in the old forum, we could reply directly to any post ... here, it seems, the reply will by default come to the end of the thread.

Indeed

But if you "Quote", you can of course at least have some pointer to whom you're replying to. No links, though, and no "thread indentation" either (but  I prefer strict chronological sequence anyway).

Actually, some people hate the thread hierarchy. There is no "one size fits all" display type.

Using the Quote option and carefully editing everything clean before posting for real (use the Preview option first, always) does work pretty well. It tends to keep discussions better focused.

I found the WorldFlight forum and this one 99% the same in terms of finding unread new posts. They all are at the top and you can get at them by clicking on one (small blue round) icon.

What I hate about threaded boards is that I either need to open lots of browser windows – or click back and forth through every single side thread.

It's so easy to address a reply: every user has a name! :-)

The same principle as on TV or radio :-)

For me as a "not much writer" the old forum was very comfortable.  I agree with Shiv's input. These are the same items I'm missing

I think some (especially me) will need some time to get familiar with this new design.

Both readers and writers will need to get used to the new format.

If it's a comfort: most new readers (not knowing the old Forum) will know nearly nothing except non-hierarchical posting lists. That has turned the standard in this everything-is-a-blog World 2.0.

Some old hands have been using this new software for about 6 months now, and they've all converted.  :mrgreen:

Absolutely.  I was not complaining, just asking, in case I'd missed something.
As Peter said, we'll just get used to (and I'm sure, enjoy) the new format.

Another disadvantage of threaded boards is this: If you want to write one general message adressed to several side threads, you don't know which side thread to attach your new message. If you pick one side thread at random, it looks like you're replying to one specific person instead to the entire discussion.

A similar problem is when too many subforums exist: As soon as a new topic is less specific and won't fit into one specific subforum, you don't know where to post your message.

The RSS feed at the buttom is something I always missed in the old forum. Now we finally have it Maybe not all forum members have already seen the tiny orange icon at the buttom?

I've noticed another nice feature of this forum software.

It seems the record of your last visit is kept on the server, and not
in your cookies on your computer.  (?)
So even if you log on from a different computer, it remembers your
last visit and shows you the relevant new posts.
