Real 747-400 with NG CDU

Just saw this from Sam Chui's post of his flight on a 747-400 BBJ and had to share. This is my first time seeing a -400 with the new LCD white text CDU usually used on the -8's being used on the -400. Hardy's NG CDU on the -400 is no longer a hypothetical situation. It's a real thing now

But let's call it LCD CDU instead of NG CDU :-)

The LCD CDU can also be linked with the legacy FMC. I'm just saying this because it often leads to confusion, even for professional pilots. When you see a CRT CDU (green text), it may be linked with a legacy FMC or an NG FMC. The same is true when you see an LCD CDU.

On that photo you can determine whether it's an NG FMC by looking at the FMC COMM page on the left CDU. It has a TAKEOFF data uplink function, so it's an NG FMC.

Detail: the ARINC 739A standard which describes both the CRT and the LCD CDU already allowed for colors and other things "long ago" (late 1998). You can feed both MCDUs both color and uncolored data to display. The default color on the LCD monitor is gray (not highlight white) and the monochrome CRT display just ignores most decoration commands.
