Typerating only job

Hi,

If you only hold a typerating in the EU (no PPL, IR, CPL, ATPL etc.) would you still be able to get an airline job?

I know most 747 operators ask for flight hours too, but how about a low-cost 737/a320 operator?

This question has been bugging me for quitte some time now...

edit: assuming your english and medical papers.

How can you hold a type rating without any other rating such as PPL, IR?

Without the basics you ain't going anywhere.

But then again, it has been some years since I got my license.

Not likely.

In the USA, you can't get a type rating without having a pilot's license, because the type rating is always something additional added to a license. As to the EU, I have no idea, but I would guess it's the same way.

In the EU too: You can't get any type rating without a pilot's license.

So only a PPL I suppose?

Jeroen Hoppenbrouwers

Type rating is to know the airplane. Says very little on knowing how to be a pilot. Or jet pilot. Or transport pilot.

... and to fly the airplane.

Short answer: a PPL is not enough.
Long answer: It depends on the country your license will be issued in, but usually a CPL and Instrument Rating is required. In some others, passing all the ATPL exams are required too.

Thx all! I was just curious, because if it's more about knowledge couldn't you justt take the exam's of the respective licenses before attending a TR (no flying)? I want to start flying but the prices...... I hoped that a TR was directly accesible, since some people already have the knowledge required to pass a TR. Thomas Salme is an extraordinary example. He was an AME and trained himself with Flight sims (it was after 1995 so maybe PS1 ;)) and after faking an atpl license he attended a 737NG TR and accumulated 10 000 hours in total, he even got promoted to captain! https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thomas_Salme

I'm sure lots of simmers/avgeeks have the knowledge to start with a TR, do the FAA or EASA allow you to only take the atpl and PPL exam's?

Will

Independent of type ratings, there are companies that will teach you about the aircraft and put you in a sim. So you can get lots of training without a license, but you wouldn't come away with a type rating and you wouldn't be eligible for hire as a pilot. But you'd have the knowledge and skills.

Honestly, the "knowledge and skills" part of an aviation career is not that hard. The hard part is getting a job.

Sounds interesting, do you know any companies that offer this type of training?

Will

Flight Safety International might be a good place to start. They used to offer type rating courses.

After 9-11 it may kinda tough if not impossible.

United Airlines also used to have a ground school and sim experience that was for the general public. One day of ground school on the 737, followed by an hour or two of simulator time. You got a certificate that said you participated in the training, but of course no type rating.

I did this myself... it was really fun. It was at the United Flight Training Center in Denver, and we had the ground school portion in a real United classroom, with a real United instructor, and then for the sim time we used the United level-D sims.

The best part was that I could log the 737 time as real flight instruction, because the instructor was legit.

This was also pre-9/11.

Sounds awesome, I'll definitely check it out. Maybe they're still offering it.

One of the first things a type rating school will ask for is a copy of your licence (CPL or ATPL). The type rating teaches you how to fly the aircraft, with an underlying requirement that you already know how to fly at least to a CPL standard, with a multi-engine instrument rating. Understanding everything which is required for a CPL, plus ATPL subjects is required to successfully pass a type rating course, let alone demonstrate competency.

Sorry...there's no shortcuts.

Here's an interview with Thomas Salme who faked his license. The video is partially in German; the parts with Salme are in English at:
