1 computer, 2 monitors mixed in portrait + landscape modes

Hardy-

I'm trying to do this with 2 separate displays on one GTX750 Ti... one is in Landscape (Overhead) above a second in Portrait..... and I seem to be having difficulties getting it to run correctly.  As usual, it's probably idiot error, but could you lend a hand.

When I follow your instructions and drag the first layout to the upper screen to fit it for the Overhead, all I can see is Boeing Brown.  Selecting "Allow to stretch over multiple displays" lets me see the cockpit; but that isn't what I need.  I need 2 instances of PSX, 1 Portrait and 1 Landscape on the same machine.  I have 2 identical Dell Displays stacked on a VESA stand....

When I drag a Windows Explorer window up to the Overhead monitor it displays fine... not sure what I am doing wrong in PSX...?

I vaguely remember it had to do with a part of PSX (rectangle) still being on the other monitor when you maximize it. Start with a smaller rectangle and assure it is completely dragged onto one single monitor before expanding it.

cavaricooper

Hoppie-  I did that, used a window, shrunk it and drug it to the upper overhead- no joy.  One big brown rectangle in the window.....

Carl, I moved your question here from the Tutorials forum.

I think you need to select "Allow to stretch over multiple displays" in PSX. Whether you stretch it or move it is up to you. But without this feature selected there is only the primary monitor available to PSX. Unfortunately, I can't tell you how to set up 1 portrait and 1 landscape mode on one and the same GTX 750. Maybe another GTX user can help you?

Portrait and landscape is a driver thing, if dragging an explorer window or anything else works, it's done.

Thanks Hoppie and Hardy-

Yes, if I can drag an Explorer window, I SHOULD be able to drag ANY window.... not sure what to do next.  I did check in nVidia Control Panel and I show a Landscape Rectangle over a Portrait Rectangle.  Portrait is primary.... perhaps I will try the other way, making Landscape the primary monitor....?

C

PS- No difference either way, and I prefer to have the lower monitor as primary (if possible) to avoid a crick in the neck :).

PPS- I have apparently been creating error logs in PSX and I attach one here in case it is useful- merely bewildering for me.....

These error logs are not generated by PSX.

And the crash didn't happen in the the Java VM code.

Quote: "# The crash happened outside the Java Virtual Machine in native code."

Hardy-

Absolutely not pointing any fingers... just posted as it was generated inside the Aerowinx folder and I was hoping it would lead to a solution.  Do you think I should update Java?  Is there a newer version you recommend?  According to PSX I am using JRE 1.6.0_43.

Ok, will try that and report back.... ta!

Ok, I installed the following.... jre-8u131-windows-x64.exe and jdk-8u131-windows-x64.exe and now I cannot start PSX. Yuck....

Ok, I now installed the following.... jre-6u45-windows-x64.exe and jdk-6u45-windows-x64.exe and I still cannot start PSX.... any suggestions?  I'm dead in the water and open/welcome to suggestions.....

Ok, I had to roll back to jre-6u43-windows-x64.exe & jdk-6u43-windows-x64... and now I am able to run PSX- yay!  Back to square one.... if any of the cockpit builder guys have figured this out... please chime in.

If all else fails, I suppose I could buy another computer to run that display... but I really would like to use 2 monitors with one computer... and this should be doable.... again- I can drag any window from lower to upper, except PSX that turns into one large brown rectangle.....

Thanks- C

I sent the crash log to http://bugreport.java.com/bugreport/crash.jsp as requested within the log.  Hopefully they will have more information in the next few days....  If I have to update from my current Java... is there a bullet proof version that will work on a Windows 7 x64 PC?

Hi Carl,
Maybe I am wrong , but it is worth a try.
You have the lowest monitor in portrait, and the higher monitor in landscape, this is your physical setup.
If you right click on the desktop and select screen resolution you get a setup of your virtual monitor position.
Do you have this virtual setup matched to the real life one, in other words, is your second monitor above your first?
If so, try to drag the upper monitor to the right of your first one, so they are next to each other, if you now extend PSX from your left monitor to your right it should show up on the top one just fine, at least, it works on my setup.
Hope it helps.

Ivo-

I should've known that you, my friend, would have a solution!  What you mentioned, is exactly how I have it set up both physically and virtually in Nvidia Display Manager.  I will drag the second monitor from above the main screen to beside it.  As my first monitor is in portrait mode, does it matter whether the landscape monitor is positioned to the right top or right bottom of the first one?

As soon as I get home I will try that and report back to you. Thank you so much, if that works you will have saved me quite a lot of hassle!!!!!

hi Carl,
Hold your horses! Not sure if it works for you, can be completely something else. Lets keep our fingers crossed!

And no, it does not matter, only your mouse behaviour is affected, if you position your right monitor horizontal centerline  at the same level as your left, and you place your mouse in the horizontal centerline of the left monitor,  your mouse will appear in the middle of your right monitor if you move it
If you place the right monitor higher , your mouse  appears near the bottom of your  right monitor when moving , if this makes sence,

Vo-

Yes, it does make sense.... keep your fingers crossed and I will update a bit later.... really hoping this works!!

Regardless wether my answer was good or wrong, the virtual position of your monitors can be important!

The position of the virtual monitors can make a big difference .
For example, lets say you have 3 monitors , 1and 3 next to each other and 2 above your head  for the overhead panel.
If the virtual position is 1:2:3 in line you have  for a hull HD monitor 5760x1080 pixels.
If you place the middle monitor above the two others as in reality , you have to generate. 5760x2160 pixels, you have to extend PSX to the top monitor , and this might create problems to display everything in the right place.
Unless you use the horizontal divider bar also.

Now in this setup lets say you want to display CPT PFD, ND, and half of the upper EICAS, on the left monitor,
FO PFD,ND, and half of the upper EICAS on the right monitor , and the overhead on the center one.
You need  to run 2 instances of PSX  to do this,first instance runs the left and center monitor, second instance runs the right monitor.

Your pc does not know the physical position of your monitors, it only knows what you tell it, and you can fool it.

So if you, instead of 1:2:3 move the number 3 to the number 2 position , to get 1:3:2 , and number one is the main monitor, when you extend PSX to the second monitor, you  will notice it skips the center one and extends on the right on, because windows believes number 2 is to the right of number 3. Extending further will fill up monitor 2,
If you slide the vertical green divider bar  all the way to the right of number 3 monitor, this will display the left portion of PSX, allowing to show the whole MIP, on 1&3 and the right portion of PSX shows up on monitor 2, for the overhead panel, and now you need only 1 instance running

Sorry for the  cumbersome  explanation, it's the only way to make my point clear

I've been thinking about replacing my old single 2K pixel PC monitor with a new higher pixel count single monitor.  It will serve two basic purposes in addition to everyday PC use:  PSX and editing my 22 megapixel DSLR photos.

Here's the naming system (based on the number of megapixels in each monitor) I use for this quest.  It was taken from:

https://diglloyd.com/blog/2017/20170108_2112choosingprodisplay.html

2K = 1920 @ 2.1 MP
2.5K = 2560 @ 3.7 to 4.1 MP
4K = 3840 or 4096 wide @ 8.3 to 9.4 MP
5K = 5120 wide @ 14.7 MP
8K = 7680 wide @ 33.2 MP
15K = 15360 (will this be called 16K?) @ 133 MP

Is there anything to worry about with respect to using a single higher-resolution monitor with PSX?  I know that there will be some extra stress on the PC and video card to support a new monitor.  I don't use a scenery generator, but may look into using one later.

Best wishes,

Phil Bunch

Hi Phil

Permutations and Combinations:  I've had similar issues getting a good one computer solution (not expert in networking) for PSX and photo processing (30-40 Mpixel RAW files in my case).  Currently using a 4K Dell laptop with a large screen (50'' class) 2K monitor and extending the display.  Works well for both at the moment but as you note there are issues with speed etc. etc.  In this setup PSX works well in extended monitor mode with adequate resolution/speed (50-60 fps for most cases) and also allows detailed work on photo processing.  PSX would benefit from going to 4K large display also but haven't looked into requirements for current TV/monitors.  Need to max out on memory and speed for the primary computer when you buy no matter what.
