Guys,

Many of you probably know, but just thought I'd share.

There is a book entitled 'Handling the Big Jets' by D P Davies.

Just having a household spring clean and found my copy.

Well worth a look. Highly recommended. (Not a cheap book though at around $70AUS new) but very informative.

Cheers,

Paul.

Hi Paul,

right, that's one of the "must-have" books. It's one of the few books I read again and again, and each time I discover/learn something new :)

And to all reading enthusiasts I'd recommend annother "must have":
"Flying the big jets" by Stanly Stewart, published by Airlife, England. The 3rd edition includes the 747-400 series.

These two plus "Big Boeing FMC Guide" by Bill Bulfer of course are the classic "must have"s for all PS1/PSX pilots, I would say.

Regards, Holger

P.S.
Sorry Hardy for the "advertisement" (I know you do not really like adverntisement here) but these few books are really sort of "addons literature" which help to understand and love PS even more.

Maybe I should consider that BIG FMC guide ... transitioning from the Classic to the -400 and maybe next year, the -8, I am not that experienced in glass.

I would suggest, though, this book http://www.pilotsreference.com/ rather than handling the big jets. Aaaaah, I see, there are two different books, "Handling the big jets" and "flying the big jets". I think I had the "Handling" one, and it is quite tough to get through. Good for historic reasons, but not recommended as reference, really. But the pilotsreference book is really brilliant, I should have read it a long time ago already!

No problem at all, Holger. I recommend those books also.

"Handling ..." was sold out for many years. I see they finally decided to put it on the market again.

"Handling ..." is not meant to be a reference, I think; it discusses mainly aerodynamics. It's completely different to "Flying ..." which is rather a general description of a flight from A to B.

Guys....i think is "flying the big jets"......if not mistaken, was written by a BA captain? and as usual, the last chapter was about a sample flight of his flying from LHR to JFK....

I bought that almost 10 years ago in Sydney, and seems to me the price has not gone down at all...worth a read and also as a guideline for 744.  Recommended
OK....I am ok, if you are ok...!!

Maybe I should have a look at the "Flying the big jets" some day then, I always confuse these two books, "Handling" and "Flying" ... there are some other books I need to finish first, though

I haven't come across the other title 'Flying The Big Jets'.

Is it still in print ? I might just have to add it to my growing library. :)

Books like this are certainly very complimentary to the PS1 experience.

Cheers,
Paul.

Watch out, later prints have the 777 as main example (though written by two mostly 744 guys).

Thanks Jeroen,

I will add that to the basket!  :)

Hi Holger,

Yes, I just went online to Amazon and ordered a copy of Flying tBJ's.

It's only money!

Flying The Big Jets is a great read, I picked it off the shelf again recently and really enjoyed that last section describing the entire flight.

My copy is so old, it has a picture of a Boeing 707 on the front

Several years ago, I wrote to Stanley Stewart (via his publisher) to see if he was planning an update to his wonderful book. He gave a very courteous reply that he would love to but felt that, at his advanced age, he wasn't up to it. :(
Pity, because his book is so readable.

"Flying the big jets" is nice to get a basic understanding of subjects related to flying and to get a glimpse of the BA operation of a typical L/H flight, in a simplified way (esp. editions 2, 3 and 4, 74 classic, 744 and 777 respectively).
"Handling the big jets" is a GREAT read if you are preparing for a job interview and need all the facts about swept wings, high speed flight, jet engine operations. It is quite heavy-going and not much "entertainment reading". Quite a handful to take in!

I remember when I got "Handling ..." (many years ago) I couldn't stop reading because it was so entertaining (i.e. fascinating). I found "Flying ..." less interesting. I liked Stanley Stewart's "Crisis on the flight deck" much better.

Yes, "Handling..." is more fascinating than "Flying..." in terms of technical detail.
I suppose however the average "layman reader" would maybe get more out of "Flying..." than "Handling...", just as a comparison between the two. "Handling..." is definitely THE bible of heavy jet flying, hands down.
"Emergency, crisis on the flight deck" is quite a good read, for sure. "The naked pilot" is also a great book to have.

PS great work on the PS1 sim Hardy, I didn't know something of that level would be available to the public! Absolutely amazing. And by the looks of it PSX is going to blow everyone's hats off!

Thanks for the discussion regarding these two books.  The wife, upon proper urging, got me both of them for Christmas.  I just finished them and gained a lot of insight into the operation of the 747.  Thankfully, the copies I got were the 747, not the 777 as alluded to in later additions.

Cheers,

Jon
