Manual is 600 pages and not helpful

Really!  Perhaps you should give it a bit more of a chance.  As I recall the upgrade from the 747-100 series to the 747-400 series (at my old airline) was a couple of weeks of full time, computer assisted learning. Not to mention time in a working cockpit layout and several full on  (FAA certified) simulator rides.

This simulation is LIKE THE REAL THING and as such there is a steep learning curve for even experienced real time folks!


(And yes, that includes retraining an old (80+) retired guy!!)

I did  this weekend. Advised that I would wipe the software off my hard drive and return the CD. We will see what they say.

I am a 60 year old that has been doing flight sim since early 90s. Very dissatisfied with the panel set up - not very good if you have one screen ( mine is 42inch) and don't a have a degree in computer networking.
 
Very disappointed! I hope I get my money back as I have removed this from my computer and put the disk on the shelf. - What a waste!

You can't get your money back as you can't prove that you will erase the copy you made.

But you can ask questions on how to display PSX on your 42 inch monitor.

If you think PS1 fills your 42 inch better than PSX, then you are either a troll or someone who tries to get a free copy.

I understand your problem, it's not like x-plane or FlightGear and the layouts there.  

There IS however considerable flexibility in how the panels can be displayed.  

"RTFM" applies BIG TIME to this simulator and how to configure it.  I suspect that given time you'd come to appreciate just what it is that you have there!

Do you have the time to read page 17? It shows how to "break" and "close" panels.

You can do this on your 42 inch. You don't need a network.

Before I spend a considerable amount of money on a single piece of software I would do some investigation and research before I made this decision.

The manual is a work of art and very easy to understand. Sure it is lengthy, but this is a complex product. As others have said here, how can you convey all the complexity and nuance of a 747-400 into a short pamphlet?

So let's separate the issues you are having with the product itself / how to interact with it on your computer display, with how to operate a Jumbo Jet. It may be frustrating, and you say you are 60, so it may take a bit longer to adapt to this new way to display things, but I assure you that it is not a terrible product. I too have been flying sims since the 90s and loved PS1. It was very nice to have all the relevant displays and controls on one main screen with pop-ups for the overhead. PSX does things differently, but is extremely flexible.

I understand your frustration, but it will take a little time. I am actually surprised at how few controls and menus there are in PSX considering all that it can do. Maybe someone will create some video tutorials to help walk people through the set up and control process.

Since you purchased the product, you are clearly a fan of the aircraft, so may I suggest patience and it will be rewarded. I have not even taken the plane off yet, but am slowly learning my way around and I know I will get there. This is not a game, it is a very sophisticated flight simulator.

Setting up the layouts is a learnng process.  It is amazingly adept at configurations and after a while I am finding I need less and less. For Normal ops. 5 of the 9 choices cover 90% of my needs.

Take a look at the layout thread (BTW mine has already evolved further).  I fly on everything from a 65" TV to an 11" MacBook Air.  Learn to pan & zoom INSIDE one of the 4 frames, using your mouse and then reset everything with the 0- BRILLIANT!

It can be overwhelming and sometimes frustrating, but each time I found the shortcoming was mine .

Last thing- read the responses to your initial post.  If this group can't assist you with the learning curve- no one will be able to.  The responses were courteous and helpful- a delight in the usually rabid world of the inter web.

The extensive preview manual, available before purchase, shows in great detail both the beauty and the technical challenges of this flight sim and of learning to fly a 747-400.  I don't understand how anyone could fail to understand both the richness of its features and the challenges of mastering (simulated) piloting of a 747-400 airliner.  As a former PS1 enthusiast, I'm very much looking forward to at least a year-long basic learning curve that in more depth will extend into the indefinite future.

The controls layout design and its flexibility has been well-received by its users, and users have posted their screen layout designs, both for single-monitor systems (like mine, at the moment) and for multiple-monitor systems.  Have you tried any of these out?

As others have mentioned, if you have specific technical questions, please post them and everyone from Hardy to new users will likely try to help.

You can also have multiple layouts and in 1 second load a complete new set of 9 from the Instructors page, very flexible. Then you can potentially split each of these 9 preset layers in to another 4 splits within the page of that layer.
Or
On a 42" TV you could almost just display the complete cockpit and use one page of one layout.
So many options.

Well said, guys (Stekeller, Matt Sheil, cavaricooper, Phil Bunch). The depth of PSX is astonishing, as is its user manual. I will probably never master PSX but I can appreciate the work that has gone into it.

I'm still tinkering with layouts on my MacBook Pro 13" screen - which is a challenging environment - but it still works well. The power of swapping between 9 different screen layouts in an instant is superb. It's a simple yet powerful solution to cramming an entire flight deck on a screen - or screens. The simulator's flexibility to cater for serious simmers with multiple windows or just a single one is just one superb aspect of this feature-rich product.

Stick with it and you'll be rewarded.

You can also download the layout file itself, so you don't need to do any of the setup -- just drop the file in your layouts folder.
