Is there any IVAO/Vatsim Software for PSX yet?

Started by Alec246, Mon, 11 Aug 2014 18:37

I'm wondering if I'll be able to fly online with PSX when I get my copy.

I think it's a huge immersion factor to get real ATC in the sim. If not, is anyone working on it?

Thanks!

Yes.  Garry's VisualPSX/TrafficPSX do exactly that.  VisualPSX provides the scenery visuals and TrafficPSX provides the interface to VATSIM

Just a slight addition; TrafficPSX provides an interface to FSX and Squawkbox  4 / vPilot - it is Squawkbox or vPilot that actually connects to VATSIM.

While you are waiting to buy PSX, download the VisualPSX Suite and browse the manual. It has explanations and illustrations that will answer your questions. It is available from the site below.

Just to add: it would be technically possible to develop a Squawkbox for Standalone PSX, but this would not really work. You do need the FSX scenery for ground ops. It is much more practical to drive FSX around with PSX and fool FSX Squawkbox into compliance.

FYI I recommend vPilot as it's simpler than Squawkbox4.

Well thanks guys!

IVAO no deal yet? I fly a lot in Brasil also, and here we're mainly IVAO.

So, PSX doesn't connect to VATSIM, FSX does, and PSX is connectec to FSX? Does this work with X-Plane also? My FSX is acting very strange on my machine, I would probably only use it for Taxing, take off and landing.

Also, is it working with Prepar3d?

Thanks for all the recommendations!

There is XSquawkbox for X-Plane and XView can run alongside it and feed across traffic positions to PSX.  I haven't used it much, but others have reported problems with XSquawkbox.  (It is not something that I have developed).

If you give it a go, it would be interesting to hear of your experience.

Makes sense...
On the other hand, developing a standalone squawk box for PSX would have the advantage of being independent of the scenery generator being used (MSFS - Xplane) and could maybe even be independent of the OS (eg. if written in Java), isn't it?
(Unfortunately this is far beyond my IT abilities so I could be completely wrong)

I don't have the space at home to run multiple computers and multiple screens to link PSX with FS but I would love to be able to connect PSX to Vatsim anyway.
The ground ops issue never really stopped me with PS1 (but I also never tried to taxi around blindly during Worldflight events for example   )

I have developed such a standalone for PS1, and despite it working 100% correctly, it was very quickly replaced by a scenery-driven client as nobody could do real ops without ground scenery. Also there was significant pushback from especially VATSIM around the network certification and not-invented-here issues.

That same old SB747 can be adapted to PSX in a few days, but I won't even try, given the headaches it gave me in the end.

If you need ground movement support, consider to purchase a small PC under USD300 and load the most skeleton MSFS on it. You will see taxiways and skeletons of other planes, which is sufficient. When off the ground, you will have a magnificent secondary display/panel/chart reader.

Will consider that.
Was worth asking though  ;)

The other consideration is that using MSFS or Xplane you do not have scenery alignment issues at airports.... this was a pain when there was some traffic and people used the native client, PS1 users at random locations over the airport, causing go around...

I really think it would be best to have SquawkBox / IVAP connected directly to PSX. It doesn't matter if you use FSX or X-Plane, I think would just work better this way, to have the data for Vatsim / Ivao coming directly from PSX. Less change of something going wrong.

We could still use both Sims for Scenery generator, but doing this way we could even turn off the scenery generator during cruise, and enable it only when taking off and landing.

Hi Jeroen,

With the release of PSX Earth we now have an other great option to see where we are going when taxing but this doesn't allow to connect PSX with Vatsim.
Any chance to convince you to rewrite your squawkbox software for use with PSX?

Cheers,
Sylvain

Nah, sorry. The problem isn't adapting it for PSX, but I ran into so much red tape to even be allowed onto the VATSIM network that I just shelved the attempt.

Also, the first thing you will hear ATC telling you is "behind the company 737". Try that without full scenery "as everybody has it", i.e., FSX.  Although superficially, VATSIM isn't strictly for FSX, in practice it very much is.

There is an aphorism in the USA that seems to fit this long-standing VATSIM situation:

"The more things change, the more they stay the same"

EDIT:    This is originally a French aphorism:

plus ça change, plus c'est la même chose

You're probably right... It's a shame they do not welcome more sim platforms. We're all in the same hobby in the end...

Jeroen Hoppenbrouwers

It almost feels like "we welcome more sim platforms, as long as it does not mean we need to welcome more developers."

Hang on - the surface movement environment is a significant part of the online environment.

And VATSIM has clients for FS9, FSX, Prepar3d and XPlane, so it's not FSX only....

AND I know years ago there was a rather insular approach to development, but they are continuing to open up and are trying to provide an API for clients as part of their development... e.g. see an OPEN SOURCE client under development...

Sometimes change does happen - slowly, but it does.  :)

Do I understand correctly that to fly online I need to have all the time another simulator (X-Plane, FSX or P3D) up? Or does one of these addons provide a direct link bypassing the requirement to use the second simulator? As I do like to use X-Plane on approach and departure but once flaps are up it only increases the CPU load a lot.
