PFD, ND monitor size 8 * 8 inch question

PDF, ND monitor size question.

Hi All,

"They" say that the PDF, ND etc. size is square 8 * 8 inch. Seems right.

I doubt if this is:

1. The real screen of the monitor.
2. The visible screen of the monitor.
3. The outer edges of the aluminum bezels around it.

It seems reasonable to assume that it is the monitor screen i.s.s.

But.., when I resize a suitable photo in a CAD-program and use the well known reference of the standby instrument-bezels ( 3 1/4 inch), than... it seems that the -outer size- of the metal bezel, is the 8 inch (horizontaly). Vertical is of course slightly more, because of the monitors enclosing/fixating mechanism with the typical triagles at the upper corners.

What's the truth here ?

Has somebody here a photo of how this monitor enclosing functions, what you see when it is in the opened position ?

(Started in the DOS-age... ;)  with PS1, worked on the Level-d 767 in the 20-st century, but ... now back in the 21-st century with PSX.

Attached the home-brew CDU's I made together with a couple of friends.
I know, I know..., it's the newer model, but they will nevertheless serve me ...

If I understand you correctly I have a diagram of this somewhere but am not sure how to share it.

Send me a PM and maybe we can work something out.

Stefan,

In your profile here, your mail adres is "hidden", so sending a private message is not possible for me.

But in my profile sending a private message is possible for you.
After that, we can use/exchange our normal mail adresses for sending.

Will that do ?

Thanks in advance !!!

Greetings Hessel,

I am most impressed with your home built CDU,s. As a result of changing my set up I will have two CDU keyboards with the necessary programming for PS13 from Haegstrom which will become surplus to requirements.
What I will now lack is a small enough monitor to build a stand alone CDU
Could you let me know where you obtained yours from?.

Cheers

Derek
PS One of these keyboards would be happy to find a new home!

Hi Derek,

The 5 inch LCD screen was this:

http://members.chello.nl/~h.oosten/gd567m03%20gti050tn22%20v.1%20%20ver:rd001%20-en%20good%20display%20lcd%20cdu.pdf

The "electronics" consist of a simple OpenCockpits Keycard and they will be connected by the  upcoming PSXeecon from Nico Kaan, mentioned in the SIOC thread here.

http://www.lekseecon.nl/psxseecon.html

I use an USB to VGA adapter, and till now .. a splitter for the same screen information on both CDU's.

THAT ... will be better within ~2 weeks ... ;)

Thank you Hessel  for the info.
When am I going to find the time to make a standalone CDU once PSX arrives

Hi Hessel,

compliments for your CDUs! Perfect screen quality!

Where are the CDU-Bezel / Keypads are coming from?

Hi Hans,

It's 150 % ... , just like everything Hardy programmed in the software.. ;)   home made.

Have a CNC mill, the knobs are pre-milled in Obomodulan, as is the body. The body still is Obomodulan and painted. Material is strong enough. The best 3D-milled knobs were used as "mould-mothers" for the epoxy made definitive ones (of course mixed with Boeing brown... pigment). Connectors were milled (and later epoxy-ed between knobs and switches, where the LSK knobs are slightly asymmetrical placed on their knobs to get them as lateral as possible. Backing is made of our beloved.. aluminium. OpenCockpits keycard (now PSX compatible). Separate dimmable backlighting. PCB was designed by my building-mate and afterwards professional produced at PCB Europe. Pathes were to narrow/small for self etching/milling. Website visible on our pcb does not exist. Screws real inch screws. Made the light dependent resistors fake, but they can be connected on our pcb (if we desire .., which we do not at home .
F.y.i. some extra pics.

Hi Hessel,

thanks a lot for the details and your pics! One of the best CDUs Ive ever seen (despite the genuine ones ;o)) !!

To Hardy
Greetings

Are the key codes for the CDU incorporated in PSX the same as PS?

I ask because the Haegstrom board that runs my CDU connects directly into the keyboard, and therefore should send the necessary commands.

If not I guess that I would have to approach the manufacturer for new firmware.

The way MCDUs are switched onto the keyboard is slightly different. In PS1, you had to push and hold a Shift key; in PSX, you briefly push the left Shift for the left MCDU, right for right, and both for center.

The other keypresses are not the same, though the major ones (LSKs, letters, numbers) are.

So you will need to fix some firmware if you intend to connect this keyboard to the main PSX computer. If, on the other hand, you have another computer available, you can write a small program to pick up the old key strokes and then use the network to tell PSX what you want. This is cleaner in the long run.

I believe that Haegstrom reprogramming is possible without contacting the manufacturer. Any other people out there with Haegstroms?

Hi Derek,

most keys in PSX are identical to those in PS1. Not being a DOS program anymore, I had to change a few key combinations in order not to interfere with MS Windows key functions (or Mac functions for that matter). E.g. ALT+F4 is no longer a PS function because that would quit the simulator like any other MS Windows program.

Jeroen, for the SHIFT switch, in PS1 too you just needed a stroke, not a hold.

Derek, for details on this subject, please refer to the Aerowinx Operations Manual page 28 (page 24 in the Preview PDF).

Hmmm... am I mixing up with IPC? There was a shift-and-hold somewhere.

Time to shut up. I've showed off my ignorance already enough for this week

Thank you Hardy and Jeroen for your replies

I am impressed that you think I may have the ability to write a small program!!!

However with my proposed new set up I will have 5 computers lying around looking for a home!

Last week my older brother passed away. He was a simulator instructor with ANZ for 20 years firstly on the DC8 then the 200 and finally the 400 after 25 years in the military.

I was so looking forward to him seeing my copy of PSX.

Oh well we all face the grim reaper, some sooner than others :(

Cheers

Condoleances, Derek. This will hurt.

He'll see that copy anyway, rest assured.

I'm very sorry to learn of your loss.

I've learned by living life into retirement that these losses don't become easier.

I'm so very glad you're going to be enjoying PSX with us.  Thanks for having the patience (and wisdom!?) to stay with this remarkable project and our most remarkable group of friends and fellow aviation enthusiasts.
Best wishes,

Phil Bunch

Garry Richards

Hi Derek. As Phil said, such losses don't become easier with age. Please accept my condolences.
