New PSX video on YouTube

Good evening,

please remember that this video contains extreme compression artfefacts. The original PSX software looks much sharper. Especially the magenta curves and diagonal lines are very stairway-esque in the screen capture scenes (those that are not filmed by the photo camera). Also, the screen capture scenes are rather jerky. The original PSX software, on the other hand, runs smoothly and at higher frame rates.

Thank you, absolutely fantastic!!
The sound is very impressiv too.
With PS1.3 I tried the Kathmandu approach very often and often without much success :oops: It looks really easy how you fly it in the video.
Have you ever tried the famous 08 approach to Innsbruck with PSX? In reality it isn't allowed with a 747 of course, but for training purposes with the simulator it would be a nice experience I think.

Wow. Amazing.

The joystick looks like a Logitech, just like the one I have.


Since the discussion is about difficult approaches, I'll try SBRJ (Santos-Dumont, Rio de Janeiro) RWY 02 visual approach. Might not be the hardest approach in the world but it demands some nerve as you fly pretty close to the sugar loaf. =)

Don't underestimate the possibilities of large airplanes to fly sharp turns!
I was sitting in an LH A380 who did an simulated approach to Salzburg. At
the end of the runway we did an unbelievable sharp left turn. And the plane had about 400 passengers on board, so was not really light.

The turn radius is a function of TAS, not a function of aircraft size.

Rhetorical question: How high is Vref30 on a light 744?


By the way, in the video I made some pilot mistakes and some suboptimal pilot actions. One shouldn't film and fly at a time :-)

The letters on my joystick read "Logitech extreme 3d pro".

The 4 upper silver buttons are assigned to ...
- A/P disconnect (forward left)
- PTT push-to-talk (aft left)
- Flaps up (forward right)
- Flaps down (aft right)

The black hat switch:
- Stab trim (forward/aft click)
- Layout cycle (left/right click)

Rhetorical question: How high is Vref30 on a light 744?

I looked the speeds up in an old (May 26/95) manual page. It shows:

30 ref 127 at 440, 000 lbs
          133 at 480
          139 at 520
          145 at 560
          150 at 600
          155 at 460 *
          160 at 680 *
          165 at 720 *
          170 at 780 *
          175 at 800 *
          180 at 840 *
          184 at 880 *
* In the event that an overweight landing is the best course of action.

I'd assume those numbers to still be valed.

Nice video and nice landing on 04R in my home airport EKCH - just wondering why it is so blurry in the camera sequences compared to the previous alpha video? I definitely find the old video better in presenting PSX besides of the audio of course.

Maybe because I have stretched the original 4:3 optics to 16:9. And maybe because the flight deck section shown is more zoomed out than in the Alpha video, i.e. the details are now smaller, and if you then zoom these in on YouTube, you will zoom in the pixels.

It's a dilemma. Screen capture videos are sharper, but are very jerky due to extreme frame rate fluctuations. And camera recordings are smoother, but very blurry.

Is is easier to handfly, line up and land compared to PS1? Now that the primary instruments are much smoother and precise?

When you have flown PSX for some minutes, and then return to PS1, you will laugh about PS1 ...
