Hello,

some users have reported problems with Java 8 update 40. When starting PSX it sometimes stops loading at 79%, and only the second or third restart attempt will load PSX completely.

If you have the JRE version instead of the JDK version of your Java 8, then you should install the JDK version.

If you do already have the JDK version and it still doesn't work, you should downgrade below Java 8 update 40, or even below Java 8.

It might help to analyse the problem by checking for error messages. These can be displayed when you start PSX from your Windows Prompt or Mac Terminal. Start your Windows Prompt or Mac Terminal, and at the command prompt change to your Aerowinx folder by typing cd and the folder name, for example:

cd desktop
cd aerowinx

Press Enter after each entry.

Then copy and paste the following line to the command prompt:

java -Xmx500m -Djava.library.path=Interfaces -jar Aerowinx.jar

Then press Enter. PSX will load and run (if it doesn't stop at 79%).

When errors occur during this PSX session, they will be displayed under the command prompt.

Note that some hints may occur when loading a situ file that has been stored with an older PSX version. These hints are normal, they are not errors; they may look like these:

FirstCrzWptIdx not found
LcpPttCp not found
LcpPttFo not found
RudRatios not found
Windshear not found
RadStatFail not found
CfgClbWashout not found
VoiceAtis not found

The errors of interest are Exception errors etc.

Regards,

Hi Hardy,

I experienced this on OSX. First launch attempt stuck at 79%. Multiple subsequent launch attempts were initially slow to display the splash screen (approx. a 10 second delay), but then it loaded, but slowly. I also had problems with the position page - entering an airport would NOT cause the gate selection screen to appear (this only happened the first couple of times, when it was very slow to start).

Suddenly (after about the 10th launch), it started launching fine.

I just restarted OSX, and now it is launching fine (no delay). :?

EDIT: It seems possibly related to resolution. I was running my rMBP at max resolution that OSX allows, and it is OK. I just set it back to the standard resolution for the display, and now PSX is hanging at 79%.

Second launch attempt was OK.

According to PSX, it is running Java 1.8, version 25.25-b02.

Output from java -version:

java version "1.8.0_25"
Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.8.0_25-b17)
Java HotSpot(TM) 64-Bit Server VM (build 25.25-b02, mixed mode)

EDIT2: Just launched it multiple times - it seems random.

EDIT3: I launched it 12 times via command line, at different resolutions, and it loaded every time.

I had the same problem with JDK of 64Bit Java. Switched to a 32Bit install and my load issues went away.

I see by your output you also have 64Bit loaded. Be interesting if you used 32Bit if you see the same results of the loading issue going away.

All I know is that I have Java 8, update 40.

The name of the folder where it is installed should give a hint, starting with jre* or jdk*, respectively.
Also size: the JRE (7_21) is about 140 MB, the JDK is considerably larger.

I removed Java 8 v40 (64bit) and installed Java 8 v40 (32bit), following HercM`s suggestion. Seems to work all well now. Thanks.

Is there any performance difference between the 32 and 64-bit versions? Once that is decided, would someone please post a link to the most recent fully working and best compatible version of Java here?

Thanks in advance!

The latest version of Java works, just needs to be in my opinion the 32Bit version.

The only difference to my knowledge is the amount of RMA 64Bit and 32Bit can access:

http://howtodoinjava.com/2014/07/09/difference-between-32-bit-java-vs-64-bit-java/

The more information that can be accessed from memory versus from a page file on a hard disk is the only benefit as memory is faster. Will we notice it in PSX? Sure there is a debate there somewhere and depends on a great many of factors including what else is running on the machine.

On my iMac with a version of Yosemite which had been through multiple OS upgrades and various Java versions since it was new back in 2011, I had the occasional lock up at 79% with the JDK x64 version installed.

I then rebuilt the computer, installed the latest JDK x64 and I've not had a single problem.

It's giving me problems with java 8.40 64bit Windows. Unfortunately, I need the 64 bit version for other programs.

Sometimes it gets stuck at 79%, but even if I get through, I can only choose my last situation. This is annoying.

Any workaround?

I fear we can only wait until this problem is fixed in a future Java version of the 64 bit variant.

There is a tiny little chance of me finding a workaround, but for this I need some feedback from you guys re Exception errors. Please try my suggestion in the first post of this thread and report the results. Thank you!

Hardy, I recently also had a hung startup @79%. Unfortunately, when I started PSX a second time via the command line using
 java -Xmx500m - java.library.path=Interfaces -jar Aerowinx.jar
it started just fine.

I'd suggest that you implement an automatic logging function with the next update; this way it would be ensured that any hickups will instantly be documented in a more developer-friendly format.

Hardy:

I would again request a sticky with the latest "trouble-free" Java versions for Mac & Win x32 & x64. Thanks for considering.

Carl, this here is the sticky thread you requested.

As posted above, the problem is with Java 8 update 40.

Dennis, I'll try that in the next PSX update.

Hardy:

Thank-you! What I was hoping for were actual links to the "recommended" downloads. That way, when a new version comes out, and it is FULLY VETTED- there can be one central place to refer any version questions to- with the assurance that the particular version has been thoroughly checked for compatibility with PSX.

I know Java claims to run billions of things- I care only about ONE :)

Carl:

If Java 8 update 40 is the reported trouble-maker, all other versions can be considered trouble-free.

The amount of "all other versions" is 100+. I'm not going to post 100+ links here. Every platform has its specific Java Virtual Machine (JVM). Every OSX version, every Win version, every Linux version etc.

java.com is your place where you can chose from hundreds of links suitable for your personal operating system and operating system version.

They are the specialists, they update their lists. I can't offer this service, sorry!

Quick update from my side: after the initial problems starting PSX, it has started flawlessly since. It sometimes appears to take a moment at 79% but then continues loading.

Youp I have noticed the same. Running here with Java 8 Update 25 (64-bit). It very rarely has stopped for a longer than 10 seconds on 79% when starting it over has fixed the problem :).

Updated to JRE 8 Build 40 (64-bit) on Windows, and the Instructor station is near enough INOP (it appears to work, but the sim doesn't do anything).

The Position page is completely broken.

If you need to roll back, here is a link to older Version 8 builds.
