Scratchpad: Text entry over alert message

Started by Hardy Heinlin, Thu, 11 Jul 2019 02:03

Hardy Heinlin

Good morning,

I think I need to modify my scratchpad system logic.

When an alert message like DRAG REQUIRED etc. is in the scratchpad, and I type a character in the scratchpad, the alert message should disappear, and the text I'm typing should appear. When my text is upselected or cleared, the alert message should reappear.

In the current PSX version it is impossible to type a text whenever the MSG light is on. It should only be impossible when a low-level message like INVALID ENTRY etc. is shown.

Fine. But what exactly should happen in the following scenario?

1. The complete scratchpad text reads "HELL"
2. "DRAG REQUIRED" appears
3. I push the "O" key

What happens now? (A) or (B)?

(A) The complete scratchpad text reads "HELLO"

(B) The complete scratchpad text reads "O"

I vote for (A).

P.S.: When I have entered a text over an alert message, should
the MSG light and the EICAS advisory "FMC MESSAGE" disappear?
I think it shouldn't.

(C) The scratchpad reads HELL - the O just clears the DRAG REQUIRED message and the O confirms that you've read it and goes back to it's initial state

Hardy Heinlin

Sounds good. Is that your tip or is it a known fact? :-)

That's my tip on what I'd expect

Mariano

Hardy,

Just tested one scenario.

1) Scratchpad was empty.
2) FMC displayed a message.
3) Typed a character.
4) Message cleared and my character stayed displayed.
5) Pressed CLR.
6) My character cleared and the original FMC messaged displayed again.

EICAS message and MSG light stayed on/illuminated.

Tomorrow I will try your "HELLO" scenario.

Best regards,

Mariano

Hardy Heinlin

Thank you, Mariano.

So we can at least exclude answer (C). Interesting.

Hardy Heinlin

So we need to introduce answer (D)

1. The complete scratchpad text reads "HELL" in this CDU; the other CDU is empty.
2. "DRAG REQUIRED" conditions occur; the message just appears in the other CDU.
3. When "HELL" is upselected or cleared, this CDU also shows "DRAG REQUIRED".

(Step 3 was already known)

Now since we've learned that one can type text even when messages are on the stack, I think it would be interesting to know whether the DELETE key works as well when messages are on the stack :-)

Enter and delete data at any time?

Mariano

Sorry, Hardy, are we trying to find out wether you can delete text that has prevented a scratchpad message from displaying?

It's 0424L and my brain is not at full potential ;-)

Departing in thirty seven minutes.

Hardy Heinlin

Example:

1) Scratchpad is empty

2) "DRAG REQUIRED" appears

3) Push DELETE key

Question: Will the scratchpad now show "DELETE" instead of "DRAG REQUIRED"?

:-)

Another example:

1) Scratchpad contains "333"

2) Push DELETE key

Question: Will the scratchpad now show "DELETE" instead of "333"?

Mariano

Just landed. I think I recorded what you needed. Will email shortly.

Best regards,

Mariano

New scratchpad logic is now implemented in PSX 10.82:

Thank you, Mariano. So the DEL key cannot overwrite the scratchpad. This agrees with PSX -- old and new.
