Stowaways on airliners - some of them survive!

The BBC recently published an interesting article about stowaways on airliners, often in a wheel well.

The remarkable thing to me is that people can sometimes survive extremely low temperatures, extremely low oxygen levels.  What is the reward for attempting this?  Do the survivors apply for citizenship in the target country?

Perhaps the stowaways simply don't know that the outside temperature at 30-40,000 feet is very low and that there isn't much oxygen.  Learning such things is another benefit from being a PSX enthusiast! <grins>
