Interesting. It should make for fascinating diving.

I wonder if they scrubbed all the fuel out of the tanks, and cleaned up the oil and other fluids?

The second article states that they had to make the aircraft environmentally ready prior to submersion. I would assume this would be the removal of all contaminants including any heavy metals and insulation that could break down over time.

I'm glad they took those steps. I remember being impressed by the perpetual oil slick over the USS Arizona at the memorial... even almost 80 years after the ship was sunk, it's still leaking. (Of course, a battleship carried more fluids than a 747, for sure.)

Also it was not sunk intentionally...

I guess that goes to show just how dangerous any conflict can be even decades after, not just to humans but all of the environment. (This does not cover any nuclear damage of course, that is devastating for centuries)...
