Nice, but it seems awfully expensive just so that people can have a smooth walk. A rope ladder would serve the same purpose for a fraction of the cost, right?

It has everything to do with safety and thus capacity. Off-shore work is more dangerous than work in space... and if you need 100 people on a job, with the nearest by 'hotel' on a boat, what do you do every 8-10 hours?
